Reunion Weekend 2022: College/Department Open Houses

Alumni Reunion 2022 (Aug. 4-6) is quickly approaching, and the Alumni Engagement team is looking forward to hosting a fun weekend full of activities for our alumni. The schedule of events can be viewed on the Reunion webpage, and registration is open online until July 24.

A highlight for our Reunion guests each year is visiting their academic departments and service areas. All departments are invited to host visitors during Reunion weekend's Campus Open Houses on Aug. 5 from 1-4 p.m.

If your department would like to host an Open House during that time and you haven't already notified the Alumni Engagement team, please do so ASAP by emailing Jen Lucas at jjlucas@mtu.edu and then submitting details for your Open House through our Google form before July 1.

Free Registration: Distance Teaching & Learning Conference

The Jackson Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) encourages MTU online instructors (or those hoping to teach online in the future) to take advantage of a unique opportunity to virtually attend the 38th annual Distance Teaching & Learning Conference (DT&L) at no charge Aug. 3-5.

DT&L has been the most well-known, respected and prestigious event covering online and distance learning for almost four decades now. This year, the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s DT&L will be partnering with UPCEA (University Professional and Continuing Education Association). DT&L offers attendees an opportunity to discover relevant research, innovative teaching tools and highly effective online pedagogical techniques. There’s the chance to network and brainstorm with colleagues who share a passion for online and distance education too.

Take advantage of Michigan Tech’s unlimited group pass and register centrally before July 1 so you can attend without additional cost. (To avoid being charged separately, Michigan Tech instructors should not register directly through their site, but instead use our Michigan Tech central registration link.)

Contact Thom Freeman at tfreeman@mtu.edu with any further questions about the conference or call the CTL at 906-487-3000.

EF Faculty Candidate Lesson

The Department of Engineering Fundamentals (EF) is conducting a faculty search. Please join us for the active and collaborative first-year engineering lesson by candidate Christa Meingast.

The lesson will be held at noon on Friday (June 24) via Zoom.

All are welcome to attend and participate.

Proud Innovation Series

There’s still time to celebrate entrepreneurship and Pride Month with the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s (USPTO) Proud Innovation virtual presentation series. The last discussion in the series, “From enthusiasm to entrepreneurship," will be broadcast on Wednesday (June 22) from 3-4:15 p.m. in the Van Pelt and Opie Library’s East Reading Room. Panel members will talk about what it takes to turn individual passions into entrepreneurial successes.

This event is being jointly hosted by Michigan Tech’s Patent and Trademark Resource Center and the Center for Diversity and Inclusion. All are welcome and refreshments will be served. Please register so we don't order too much, or worse, too little pizza!

2022-23 Diversity Literacy Workshops Open for Registration

Diversity Literacy training for the 2022-23 academic year is open for registration.

The Diversity Literacy Online Workshop (DLOW) is part of Michigan Tech's ongoing commitment to faculty diversity in building a supportive campus climate. Successful completion of the DLOW is required to serve on faculty hiring and tenure promotion committees. The full workshop is organized as a three-week asynchronous online course in Canvas (with two to three hours of work per week) building literacy in recognizing unconscious bias, and culminates with a one-week seminar on the legal aspects of diversity-centered hiring practices.

For those who have already taken the full three-week diversity literacy course, a one-week refresher course is required every four years. See the Diversity Training Status page for more information and a list of current training status for all faculty.

The workshop dates are listed below and can also be found on the training website, as well as an online registration form. Please note that legal aspects training will immediately follow the diversity literacy training, and faculty will be registered for them both at the same time.

We suggest that individuals register early for fall workshop dates if they are serving on faculty search or promotion and tenure committees in the coming year. If your certification is expiring but you don't need it for immediate service, we would appreciate if you register for a spring workshop instead, as the fall enrollments can get high.

If you have any questions about the DLOW and training, contact workshop administrator Amy Marcarelli at ammarcar@mtu.edu.
