Workers Who Are Out of State or Abroad

Are you considering hiring someone who resides outside Michigan, whether elsewhere in the U.S. or abroad? Or do you have a request from a current employee to work outside Michigan?

Before taking any action, including hiring a new employee or advancing a proposal for a remote work arrangement, it is essential that you reach out to your Human Resources employment representative.

Employees based outside the state of Michigan create special situations with respect to taxation, workers compensation and unemployment insurance. In many cases, these factors will create additional expenses to the department.

Human Resources can help you think through the issues and costs involved in these employment relationships.

Husky Distance Runners End Season at St. Francis

Three Michigan Tech track and field student athletes participated in the St. Francis Fighting Chance Invitational over the weekend in search of NCAA qualifying times for Nationals on May 27.

Top distance runner Emily Byrd finished fourth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 36:07.76. She edged under the NCAA provisional standard of 36:35 for the second time this spring and is currently No. 23 on the qualification list — but would have needed around 35:00 flat to make the reduced field of 15 for Nationals. Previously, Byrd posted a season best time of 35:48.51 at the 54th annual Hillsdale College Gina Relays on April 22.

Luke Moore dropped another two seconds from his personal best over the weekend in the 1,500 meters for Tech. Moore had a slow start to the season, but steadily improved throughout.

Robbie Watling took eighth place in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:31.29, narrowly topping his personal best by 0.1 seconds.
