Corrections on the Correction

unnamed

A correction to all our memories of MTU “high rise buildings”. I spent the summer of 1969 running tests for a chemistry PhD candidate that had a 10 or 15 minute cycle time.  I had a ring-side seat in one of the upper story ChemMet building labs to observe the construction of the ME-EM building. Several of us would get thru the construction fence and “do the stairs” on those warm, well-lit summer evenings.

unnamed-1Kevin,

This letter is in response to the letter from Bob Carnahan, titled ‘A Slight Correction’, concerning which was the first of the so-called ‘high-rise’ buildings on campus.  I’m sorry to say that Bob was actually correct the first time around. The Chemistry building was indeed the first high-rise at ‘da Tech’. Please see the attached photo, taken in September 1968, which clearly shows the new Chemistry building as well as the still standing Hubbell Hall, which was demolished shortly after this picture was taken to make way for the ME-EM building.  The second photo, taken the following year, shows that the Chemistry building was still the only high-rise on campus.

–Thanks, Monica and John: what fascinates me about this picture is that it’s so very close to the view today, just with the buildings being different. Pulling over at the scenic overlook in Hancock (not too far from where I live, actually) still has this same scene.
