Fall Color and Keweenaw Leaf Peeping

Connie Julien message - leaf peeping

My favorite hike to see color is through the Trap Hills, which are southeast of the Porcupine Mountains in the Western U.P. From M-64 east, you can hike the North Country Trail to vistas from the highest cliffs in the state of Michigan! You can see forever and not see any sign of civilization.

We have hiked there twice in the last week and the fall colors along the NCT hiking trail to these cliff views are incredible. This photo was taken yesterday.

For info on the NCT and directions to the Trap Hills trails, see http://www.northcountrytrail.org/pwf/.

I always loved The Covered Road toward Freda, and the Freda area in general. Back in the day guys would drive or walk old rail tracks in that area, with a guy or two on the front fenders shooting grouse. Beautiful!

In the autumn of 1984, I took some photos of the colors on the Hancock side of Portage Lake, from the Houghton side. For obvious reasons, these are some of my favorite fall color pics.
