The Mascot

wolf

Dennis, I was the Tech Husky mascot (for hockey) in the early 1970s. This being around 1973 & 1974 and skating before the home games (new ice arena at that time – I also have numerous pictures of the ice arena in construction and even a structural bolt that was not used) and in between periods after the Zamboni resurfaced the ice and when the players were warming up. I left the ice just before the game started I even skated at the Olympia Stadium during one of the GLIs – I have pictures of it.

During one of the home games with UMinn (not Duluth), I met Coach Herb Brooks. He lived up to his reputation of being a very unpleasant man – I was cussed at by him (why a girl was doing this). Hence, I never have had a good opinion of him even though he coached the “Miracle on Ice” Olympics team in 1980. Coach MacInnes was always nice to me for doing the skating. I earned a varsity letter for this too. The mascot outfit changed from the picture for 1970 – 1971 to look more like a Husky. I will look up my pictures and try to copyand send to you.

I also have an autographed hockey stick from the 1972 (?) ice hockey team (Lorne Stamler, Mike Zuke, Bill Steele, Elly Vorlichek, Jim Murray, and more) – I think they won the NCAA championship that year too. A group of us Techies (myself, Susan Dennis, Phyllis Sikorski, and 2 fraternity buddies) drove through the UP crossing into Canada at the Sault, down through Montreal area to Boston (Boston Garden) to attend those games. I have pictures of this too.

Great memories, Marj. That was the 1975 Champs, and you were lucky to see that finals. There’s video out there somewhere.

The Huskies have been Huskies for as long as I can remember.

Agreed, Vic. We are trying to figure out when all the different versions were trotted out and get any mascot stories from our alums.

I was “the Bear” for hockey season 1981 or 82 (I think) there was 2 of us, one for each game each weekend..I know there are pictures of me in the yearbook. I did signs a lot, I carried three… “Lets” “Go” “Tech”

Thank you

Jim: Any images would be great. I remember those signs.
