Dennis Walikainen tosses an update

Dennis

A note from former “TechAlum” editor, Dennis Walikainen responding to the letter from Bob Brown featured in the May 24 edition:

I wanted to respond to Bob Brown’s note about Julius Nachazel. Many alumni will recall Frisbee tournaments taking place up here when they were in school. Well, the International Frisbee Tournament (IFT) is still going strong, and the winner of the event takes home the Julius T. Nachazel trophy. The tournament, started by the Healy family will celebrate its 59th year on July 9 and 10 in Calumet this year, and the big 60th will be an entire Frisbee Week next year on the week of July 4.

Julius T. Nachazel, who started the ROTC program at Tech, features prominently in the International Frisbee and USA Guts Hall of Fame and Museum, which is housed in the Calumet Colosseum (the old Armory). Some of his family members came to visit some years back during the IFT.
