More Places and Memories

Kevin,

I got a kick out of your “Back in my Day” article, but it really got me thinking:  campus HAS changed a lot, even in the time since I graduated in ’97.

Back then, “The Dow” referred to the stock market, and the upstairs of The Library downtown was the place to sit.

As a member of Mu Beta Psi, part of our service to the fine arts department involved hauling equipment up and down the hill between Walker and the SDC for concerts and such.    These were the days before the Rosza Center, when the promise of “Walker Phase II” was something that had yet to rise out of the Oozeball court.    I also recall many a day sitting having lunch in the Student Org offices in MUB106. (Since then, despite tripling the space available, the footprint reserved for groups seemed to get smaller and smaller until most of the orgs relocated elsewhere).

For some reason, I also recall walking back from campus in the snow, and matching the cadence of my steps to the sound of “Ker-Chunk” (our pet name for the Tech “digital” flip sign on the corner) switching its display from one message to another.

Funny how it’s the little things that stick in your head. J

Best,
Kevin Britton (MTU ’97)

Thanks, Kevin—I remember that sign at the stoplight, too. It’s like I don’t know how to walk over there anymore without that cadence.
When thinking about favorite places while at Tech, One of mine would be the pond behind the old steel dam at Redridge. Seems like I could always catch a trout or two there.

Ooh! That’ll be a fun one. I’ll see how it looks today.
