Scott – I saw the article below and thought I’d forward it to you. It’s from the Inside Edge Newsletter from Inside Indiana Business.

Knowing Tech’s history in mining, I wondered if the mining simulation would be “unlike anything else in the country.” Does Tech use simulation or only actual mines?

VU Details Underground Mining Center
Vincennes University is planning what it believes is a facility unlike anything else in the country. The school has announced plans for a more than $2 million underground mining simulation center. The underground nature of the facility is what makes it unique. Vice President for Finance and Government Relations Phillip Rath says it will not only enhance the level of training for professionals in the coal industry and help cut down on employee turnover. Hi, Jim. Good question. Here’s what I found on the Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences website: I’ll forward your question to them as well. -SB

The Mine Design and System Simulation (MDSS) Laboratory is designed and developed for both teaching and research purposes in Michigan Tech’s Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences. The MDSS Lab is a modern computer mine design and simulation laboratory, fully equipped with the Sharp AQUOS BOARD Interactive Display System, audio-video equipment, and state-of-the-art, powerful computers with advanced mine design, planning, and simulation software packages. This lab also includes a smart interactive center room for video conferences and online communications. The MDSS Lab is created to enhance and facilitate the potential of teaching and conducting modern mining projects at Michigan Tech.

The recent issue of the Tech Newsletter mentioned the passing of David Sawyer (1961, Chemistry). I mentioned this anecdote before, but maybe this is time to repeat it. We were roommates in Wadsworth Hall in 1959. One Sunday morning after we had been out late doing the Copper Country Tour and were quite hung over, we discovered that the guys in the room adjacent to our desks had left for the weekend and neglected to turn off their alarm. We could plainly hear it ringing through the thin walls. Neither of us wanted to get up and find the RA, who was probably hung over too, to open the door and shut off the damn alarm. With a graceful bounce and fluid motion, David bounded from the top bunk to his desk and withdrew his hunting knife with one hand while with the other he pulled the plug on our radio on the shelf over our desks out a bit He dropped the back of the knife over the prongs and with a flash, the noise stopped. Just as fluidly he replaced the knife and was back in bed without a word being spoken. The power on the whole wing was out.

Later that day, we saw an electrician walking down the hall looking puzzled. I suppose he still is.

Good Morning,

I am a Houghton native, South Range to be specific. I moved to Grand Haven, Michigan in the lower peninsula for work after graduating from MTU with my BSME ’12.

This is an example of the bond we all share as fellow Huskies:

I was making a long drive to Two Harbors, Minnesota this past weekend for a wedding. This was a wedding in which the majority of the bridal party were Tech alumni, as well as the bride and the groom. I left Grand Haven at 5 a.m. Friday morning to drive through the UP, pick up my dad in Ishpeming, and get to the rehearsal by 5 p.m. Central Time. In between Gaylord and the mighty Mack bridge, I passed a woman in a black sedan. She had a Michigan Tech license plate on the front and back of her car and two huskies (actual dogs) in the back seat. I gave a friendly beep as I passed since I have an MTU Alumni sticker on the rear windshield of my SUV. Thirty minutes later in the middle of the bridge she passed me in return. She went into the toll lane in front of me and you can guess what happened next—she paid for my toll! I have no idea who this person was but that simple act made my 12-hour drive so much better (and I had a good story to tell when I got to the wedding).

Proud to be a Husky,
-Joshua Manninen ’12

- Great story, Joshua. And not a bit surprising. Thanks for sharing! -SB

A message to all Michigan Tech Student Athletic Trainer Alumni,

It has been 25 years since we left Michigan Tech, but hardly a week goes by that we are not in touch with friends from that time, or remembering some course work or outside activity. There were multiple outside activities and one of the most memorable was supporting the student athletes as a student athletic trainer under Head Athletic Trainer Randy Owsley. A group of student trainer alumni are considering creating an Athletic Trainer Scholarship in Randy’s name. We are looking to hear from any previous student athletic trainers to assure everyone is included. If you are an alumni trainer or know one, please send us an email to mtustudenttraineralumni@gmail.com.

Thank You,
Mike Bourdo, 1984
Duane Mariotti, 1980
Dr. Dan West, 1980
David Ziegler, 1980

- Thanks for reaching out. I hope you get a tremendous response! -SB
