Doc Berry Memories

Though everybody has a memory of Doc Berry, mine are not that great,  one of my Freshman English finals was the greatest bomb of my career at Tech.  If I remember correctly they were traditionally held from seven to nine PM on Friday.  I need not have stayed for it.  We were given quotes from the stories we were to have studied.  We then were required to identify the quote, the story from which it came, and what its significance was to that story.  I was done in six minutes.  All I could do was read the questions.
I joke that my college career, at Tech and Lake Superior, put me on both Dean’s lists.  Fortunately, academic probation came before the honors list instead of the other way around.
That was a long time ago, and I would not want to go through it again, but part of my life in Houghton was some of the best I’ve had.  There were failures and successes, loneliness and love, and friendships that are now 45 years old.

At the beginning of  the 1969/1970 year the freshmen were introduced to Doc. Berry with “I am the god of hellfire”, Arthur Brown.   It was kindly and regularly played for us by the campus radio station through orientation.   I don’t remember hearing it much after classes started.

After nearly 40 years  at Boeing I will retire this year and move on to other interests.
