Mechanical Engineering–Engineering Mechanics—PhD

Join a dynamic graduate program and conduct research that focuses on one aspect of the diverse and interdisciplinary fields of mechanical engineering and engineering mechanics. The department’s research expenditures exceed $12 million annually, and research thrust areas include advanced power systems, mechanics of multi-scale materials, multidisciplinary engineering dynamic systems, multi-scale sensors and systems, and space systems. Eighty percent of our PhD graduates go on to work in industry.

Mechanical Engineering—MS

Choose a focus of study from a broad spectrum of mechanical engineering applications, including mechanical design, simulation, manufacturing, and testing. The MS in Mechanical Engineering provides excellent preparation for doctoral studies or professional practice. You can choose from three MS degree options: the thesis option, the report option, and the signature course work option. Engineering Mechanics—MS

The MS in Engineering Mechanics provides preparation for doctoral studies or professional practice. Accelerated Master's

Accelerate your education, and get on the fast track to advanced studies in mechanical engineering. The Mechanical Engineering Accelerated Master’s program will allow you to count up to six senior-level credits toward both a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering or Master of Science in Engineering Mechanics.

Peace Corps Master’s International—MS

The Michigan Tech Peace Corps Master’s International Program affords students the opportunity to incorporate Peace Corps service into the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Peace Corps assignments for mechanical engineering students have included projects addressing water supply, sanitation, and watershed protection. Students take part in all aspects of their project, ranging from community organization to operation/maintenance.

Online Learning—MS and PhD in Mechanical Engineering

Distance learning research-based degrees at both the master's and doctoral level are designed to ensure fidelity to these relationships and thus maintain the high standards of Michigan Tech graduate degrees. The public defense of theses, dissertations, reports, projects, and plan C coursework should preferably occur on campus. Students in partnered programs may take up to 1/3 of the required coursework credits from other universities provided the course plan is approved in advance of course registration.
