Ligon's expertise is in the area of experimental mechanics. His current research activities are in the fields of composite panel design and phytomechanics. Research is being conducted to develop an understanding of the manner in which dynamic concentrated transverse loads are transferred through polymer composite panels. Ligon is a co-developer of the field of phytomechanics, which is concerned with applying analytical and experimental mechanics to the study of plants. Current research is in remote environmental sensing with the use of instrumented trees as physiological transducers to monitor and predict timber quality and growth of the U. S. Forest Reserve.
