For Current Graduate Students:
Congratulations on your upcoming graduation! Commencement is rapidly approaching and you qualify for participation in the ceremony and will be listed in the program provided:

  • Submit a Commencement Application (Walk) Form requesting to participate in commencement. This form is due in the Graduate School by 4 pm Friday, February 21, 2014.
  • Contact Nancy Byers Sprague (, 906-487-2755) in the Graduate School if your plans have changed and you are not completing your degree this or next semester.

For Students Who Previously Graduated and Who Wish to Attend Commencement:
Please contact Nancy Byers Sprague (, 906-487-2755) in the Graduate School by Friday, February 21, 2014, if:

  • You have not yet confirmed your attendance (even if you have indicated planned attendance on your “Life after MTU” form).
  • Would like to defer attendance to a future commencement ceremony.
  • Are a PhD candidate, please contact your advisor and have them confirm their attendance with Nancy Byers Sprague (, 906-487-2755).

Information for All Students:

Academic Garb, Caps, Gowns, Tassels and Hoods are required to participate in commencement and must be ordered through the Campus Bookstore by Sunday, March 2, 2014. Orders placed after this date will incur additional shipping fees and cannot be guaranteed.

Attend Gradfest at the Campus Store on Wednesday, February 26 from Noon–5 pm to meet with representatives from Balfour, Michigan Tech Alumni Relations and the Career Center. Enjoy free popcorn and refreshments. Also, take 25% off all Michigan Tech insignia items – diploma frames, clothing and souvenirs on Wednesday, February 26 only.

Students participating in the Fall Commencement 2014 will order their caps and gowns beginning in October 2014.

Academic garb, caps and gowns are available for pick-up at the Campus Store between 8 am and 4:30 pm beginning Monday, April 21 through Friday, May 2, 2014. Contact the Campus Store with questions, 906-487-2410 or

Commencement Tickets may be obtained by presenting photo ID at the Buyback Window at the Campus Bookstore between the hours of 8:30 am and 4:30 pm beginning Monday, April 21, through Thursday, May 2, 2014. You may receive up to four (4) tickets at that time. There is open seating for the audience.

Out-of-Town Degree Candidates arriving in Houghton on Friday, May 2, or Saturday, May 3, should contact the Central Ticket Office at 906-487-2073 and advise of their late arrival and make special arrangements to claim their tickets.

Students who need extra tickets: On Friday, May 2, any extra or unclaimed tickets will be distributed from the SDC Central Ticket Office on a first-come, first-served basis.

Commencement Rehearsal will be held on Friday, May 2, at 1:30 p.m. Students will line up in the lower level of the Ice Arena. Rehearsal lasts approximately one hour. You do not need to wear your cap and gown. Signs will be posted by department and then your name. Simply find your department and get in line.

Commencement Ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 3, at 10:30 a.m. in the SDC Ice Arena. Graduates should arrive no later than 9:45 a.m. Family members should be seated in the audience and not with the graduates. The ceremony lasts approximately two hours. The SDC Ice Arena and Wood Gym are alcohol-free facilities.

Seating for guests with mobility limitations (wheelchair, walker, etc.) is available. Please contact Emily Walikainen in the Registrar’s Office, 906-487-2319 or by Friday, April 25. Space for wheelchairs will be provided; however, Michigan Tech is unable to provide wheelchairs.

A Signer will be present throughout the ceremony to assist the hearing impaired.

Commencement Photo arrangements have been made with a professional photographer to take a photo of each degree candidate as he/she is congratulated on stage. Proofs and ordering information will be emailed or mailed to your home address within 4-6 weeks. Please make certain that your current home address is on file with the Graduate School.
