Karl graduated from Michigan Tech with his B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering in 1961, and his M.S. in 1962. He earned a PhD in Materials Science from Northwestern University in 1967.
Karl was appointed Assistant Professor of Metallurgical Engineering at Michigan Tech in 1967, and became a full Professor in 1981.
During his tenure at Michigan Tech, Karl made outstanding contributions to promote the development and use of austempered ductile iron (ADI), and continues to be recognized internationally as an expert in this area.
He retired in spring of 2003 and was granted emeritus status later that year. Karl recently “retired from retirement” and taught MY3300 Design of Microstructure in the spring of 2008.
In his leisure time, Karl enjoys cross-country skiing, gardening (especially tulips!), and working on his camp south of Ishpeming. He resides in Atlantic Mine with his wife, Carolyn.From 2008 Induction to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering Academy
