Renowned climber Yvon Chouinard said that when scaling mountains, he never felt scared, instead totally alive.

By that standard, Scott Wazny '94 is on cloud nine literally and figuratively. On May 30, 2005, he reached the summit of Mt. Everest.

Mountains bid Wazny to go from the flatlands of southern Michigan, where he grew up, to the mountains of Oregon in 1997. The former Michigan Tech football player - he made the NCAA Division II academic All-American team - earned a degree in mechanical engineering, aspiring to be a top-notch automotive design engineer.

After time with General Motors, Freightliner, and a master's in ME along the way, he traded work in Michigan and vacations in the West for work in the West and vacations in Michigan. Besides climbing, he has raced mountain bikes and run marathons. Portland, Oregon, he says is "utopia."
