Schedule of Events

Registration will be in the Memorial Union Building, starting on Wednesday, August 3, and continuing through Friday, August 5. Hours are 8 AM to 4 PM. Free parking will be available at all metered spots and in Lots 12 and 27, starting Tuesday, August 2.

Campus tours will be available Monday-Friday at 10 AM and 2 PM, through the Admissions Department (Administration Building, ground floor, room G29). Contact 906-487-2335

Please come to the registration area to register or to pick up event tickets if you have pre-registered. Say hello to our faculty emeriti who will be at our "welcome area" on Thursday and Friday.

Thursday, August 4

bullet point 8:30 am Welcome Breakfast and Campus Tour Memorial Union Building Ballroom (34) Brenda Rudiger, director of Alumni Relations, welcomes alumni to campus with a review of the upcoming reunion activities, followed by a guided campus walking tour. Greet some old friends, make some new ones.

10 am  - Wood to Wheels: A Working Example of Interdisciplinary Research at Michigan Tech with Dr. Ann Maclean, Professor in the School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science (SFRES)

11 am - "Mining, Smelting, and Mills, Oh MY!"  Industrial Heritage Research at Michigan Tech with Dr. Tim Scarlett, Associate Professor of Archaeology

Enjoy a traditional “Yooper” dinner and swap stories with alumni, faculty, and friends with pasties (catsup or gravy?), pickled eggs, local KBC micro-brew beer. Side salads, dessert and beverages are also included.

bullet point 10:00 am Class of 1961 Golden M Pinning Ceremony Memorial Union Building (34) Ballroom B Alumni and friends are invited to join the Class of 1961 at this presentation. Each alumnus/a will receive their 50-year Golden M pin and certificate. University President Glenn Mroz ’74/’77 will greet and present.

1:00 pm R/V Agassiz Research Boat Tour  Meet at Houghton County Marina, Hancock

Four tours will leave every hour on the hour from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. The University operates the R/V Agassiz in support of its mission in aquatic sciences, and these scientific excursions will provide insight into the research being conducted by faculty and students. Please note: Participants will be required to utilize a boarding ladder to board the vessel.

It’s a special celebration for all alumni and friends, featuring a fantastic buffet dinner, official class photo opportunities, and alumni award presentations. 5:30 pm Social (cash bar), 6:00 pm Class Photos, 6:30 pm Dinner (program to follow, business attire).

Saturday, August 6

bullet point 9:00 am– Outdoor Adventure Program (OAP) Tour Canoe the Sturgeon—Join us as we head down to the Sturgeon River, southeast of Chassell, for a nice, easy paddle with some great scenery along the way. We will provide snacks, transportation, and all the necessary equipment. Participants will meet at the Memorial Union Building and return around noon.

bullet point 9:30 am-12:30 pm  School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science (SFRES) Otter River Cabin open house.  Hosted by the SFRES Class of 1961 – celebrating their 50th anniversary!  All are welcome.  See the SFRES website for details.

bullet point 12:00 pm   – Tour the Historic Quincy Smelting Works site. Tour duration is approximately 45 minutes, hard hats will be provided. Presented in cooperation with Franklin Township, the Quincy Smelter Association, the National Park Service, the Keweenaw NHP Advisory Commission, and Michigan Tech’s Industrial Archeology program.

bullet point 12:30 pm Alumni Reunion Golf Outing - Portage Lake Golf Course (52)  It’s our second annual four-person scramble for alumni, students, faculty from all departments, and the community! Cash prizes awarded for the top three teams. Golfers will receive a swag bag. Supported by the School of Business and Economics and organized by the Michigan Tech MBA Association and American Marketing Association.  To register, contact golfouting@mtu.edu or call Rebecca Middlebrook at 906-487-2788.

bullet point 2:00 pm Outdoor Adventure Program (OAP) Keweenaw Waterfall Tour and Cookout—Visit some of the more well-known waterfalls in the area, including Hungarian Falls, Jacob Falls, and Eagle River Falls. Transportation will be provided. An OAP guide will lead you to these hidden gems. Participants will meet at the Memorial Union Building and spend 2.5 hours visiting these sites before stopping for a lakeside cookout (included) .

A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum (new location next to the Advanced Technology Design Center (ATDC) (95) on Sharon Avenue)  The Museum Gift shop and two galleries will be open to visitors from 9:00 AM to 5 PM throughout Reunion (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Visit the Memorial Grove on the east side of campus between Highway 41 and the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts (10)

Visit the Made in the Copper Country exhibit in the University Archives reading room on the ground floor of the Van Pelt and Opie Library which highlights the many different products made and exported from the Copper Country.
