With the return of faculty and students to campus, we wanted to remind everyone again that construction on the west end of Alumni Way will continue through the end of October.

Please be aware that the following areas will be impacted by this construction:

• Vehicle Traffic — Detours will be marked and traffic will be directed through Parking Lot 1 to Cliff Drive.

• Pedestrian Traffic — Sidewalks will not be available from the corner of Highway 41 and Cliff Drive until the end of the construction zone. Pedestrian traffic will be directed around the construction zone fencing and through Parking Lot 1.

• Parking — Metered parking spaces at the west end of Alumni Way will not be available. Lot 1 will have fewer parking spaces along the southwest side of the parking lot (across from the Administration Building).

• Building Access — Main building access to the Administration Building and Alumni House will not be impacted.

• Noise — While we will do our best to keep disruptions to a minimum, construction noise will occur.

This week, the Van Pelt and Opie Library and Campus Store welcome the University community to celebrate textbook affordability with posts dedicated to Course Reserve and a collaborative pilot project between the two units. In our continued efforts to put affordable course materials in the hands of all of our students, the library and Campus Store would like to emphasize three ways in which departments and instructors can further our mission to make a Michigan Tech education more affordable.

Please:

1. Be mindful of deadlines for course material adoptions. The sooner the Campus Store has a comprehensive list of materials, the better we can serve our students by partnering with the library. 

2. Utilize Course Reserve. Instructors may bring a print copy of their textbooks to the library in order to take advantage of this free service for their students.

3. Search the library’s catalog for your course materials, and be sure to let the library know when you find them. These “accidental textbooks” can be put on Course Reserve so that they are more easily identified to students, and so all students will be able to use them for free during the semester.

The Michigan Tech soccer program has been tabbed to finish fifth in the GLIAC Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Huskies are returning 19 members from last season and welcoming nine newcomers to the 2023 roster, with head coach Bulut Ozturk returning for his fourth season at the helm.

A season ago, Michigan Tech went 7-9-3 overall with a conference standing of 5-6-3. The Huskies start the 2023 season welcoming St. Cloud State next Thursday (Aug. 31) at 7 p.m. and Minnesota Duluth on Sept. 2 at noon.

Grand Valley (48 points) collected six first-place votes to top the poll. Ferris State (42 points) and Northern Michigan (39) also nabbed first-place votes to rank second and third, respectively. Saginaw Valley earned 31 points to rank fourth, followed by the Huskies (23 points) in fifth.

Mark Rhodes (SS) and Ph.D. student Emma Wuepper (industrial heritage and archaeology) are co-authors of a living bibliographic document published as an invited entry to the Oxford Bibliographies: Geography series.

The document is titled "'Imagining a Better Future through Place': Geographies of Memory and Heritage."

The document theoretically places the role of memory and heritage within the field of geography and vice versa while simultaneously highlighting emergent themes within the field, such as reparative heritage work or the use of more embodied and creative methods for better understanding the power and impacts of memory in place.

Libby Meyer (VPA) is the principal investigator (PI) on a project that has received $25,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The funding will be used to bring Guerilla Opera to the McArdle Theater on Oct. 12-15 for five performances of Elena Ruehr's new comic opera, "The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage," based on the graphic novel of the same name by Sydney Padua.

The project is a collaboration with the Department of Computer Science; the College of Computing; the College of Sciences and Arts; and the Institute for Policy, Ethics, and Culture. It is part of the celebration of 50 years of computer science at Michigan Tech.

College of Computing Closed for Retreat

The College of Computing office will be closed today (Aug. 25) for a College retreat. The office will reopen on Monday (Aug. 28).
