Hockey Hosting 56th GLI at Van Andel Arena

No. 16 Michigan Tech is hosting the 56th annual Great Lakes Invitational (GLI) on Tuesday and Wednesday (Dec. 27-28) at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The Huskies open against No. 18 Western Michigan in the first semifinal at 3:37 p.m. Tuesday. No. 11 Michigan State and Ferris State will play in the second semifinal at 7:07 p.m. Tuesday.

The GLI championship will be at 7:07 p.m. Wednesday, and the GLI third-place game starts at 3:37 p.m. Wednesday.

Fans can listen live on the radio at Mix 93.5 WKMJ-FM or online at TheMix93.com or Pasty.net. The GLI will also be livestreamed on FloHockey.tv.

New Funding

Yongmei Jin (MSE/IMP) is the principal investigator (PI) on a project that has received a $592,502 research and development grant from the National Science Foundation.

The project is titled "NSF-BSF: Computation-Guided Advanced Fabrication of Silicide Nanostructures with Novel Magnetic Properties."

Ranjit Pati (Physics/IMP) is a co-PI on this potential three-year project.

In the News

Jim Desrochers (Advancement), senior undergraduate Kenzie Garrison (biomedical engineering), and Cassy Tefft de Muñoz and Jannah Tumey (CEO) were quoted by the Daily Mining Gazette in a story about the Copper Trail Festival, an event featuring STEM demonstrations held at Michigan Tech on Dec. 13. 

Approximately 700 students in grades eight and nine from the western Upper Peninsula participated in the festival, which was organized by MTU’s Center for Educational Outreach and Mind Trekkers program, in collaboration with U.P. Michigan Works!, the MiSTEM Network and area businesses.

UPWord mentioned Michigan Tech in a story about projects approved for funding by the Michigan Strategic Fund. 

The story listed MTU as a one of many collaborators that will help “make sure that private funding sources will be available alongside state and federal grant opportunities” for the ShopHouse Park Technology and Innovation Hub, a planned outdoor recreation and product innovation space in Marquette.

Angela Hoffman-Cooper ’11 (B.S., psychology) was profiled by Best Colleges in a story about disadvantages in higher education faced by students with experience in foster care. 

Hoffman-Cooper won a scholarship to Michigan Tech, in part thanks to the kindness of a case worker who drove her 440 miles to Houghton to compete for the scholarship. She is now Ph.D. candidate at Colorado State University and a Foster Scholar.
