Veterans Speak!

As part of the 2022 Freedom Week celebration, Young Americans for Freedom is hosting four veterans who will each share their experiences while serving in the military.

Please join us tonight (Nov. 10) at 7 p.m. in M&M 610.

This year’s speakers are as follows:

  • Retired U.S. Air Force Col. Walter Cayce
Cayce served 27 years as a flight surgeon and is a graduate student in Michigan Tech’s College of Computing, studying health informatics. He is originally from Lakewood, Ohio.

  • WWII Veteran Retired U.S. Army Air Force Staff Sgt. Joseph A. Enrietti
Enrietti is originally from Mohawk, Michigan, and served in the 789th Squadron, 467th Bomber Group, 8th Air Force, as a tail gunner in a B-24 Liberator. He received an Aerial Gunner Badge, WWII Victory Medal and European Campaign Medal with a Bronze Star.

  • Retired U.S. Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Joshua King
King served for 10 years — six years on active duty as a U.S. Navy petty officer first class, and four years in the drilling reserves. While on active duty, he served as a nuclear-trained machinist mate and transitioned to an aerographer’s mate after leaving active duty and serving in the drilling reserves. He was stationed in both Hawaii and Washington, and served aboard the USS Buffalo SSN 715, a Los Angeles–class fast-attack submarine. King is a junior materials science and engineering major from Georgia.

  • Retired U.S. Navy Cmdr. Maria Kinnunen
Kinnunen, a native of New Jersey, received a B.A. in Chemistry from Columbia University in 1983. Seeking a career change into engineering, she joined the Navy as a direct-accession engineering duty officer (EDO) and attended Officer Candidate School, followed by Surface Warfare Officers School. Kinnunen later went on to attend the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, and received an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1995. She then serve as executive officer and assistant professor of naval science at Carnegie Mellon University ROTCU, where she had the pleasure of preparing midshipmen to meet the challenges of the fleet. She retired in 2007 from the USS Carl Vinson after 20 years of service.

Please join us in honoring our veterans while they share their stories. Students, faculty, staff and community members are encouraged to attend.

BioSci Seminar with Thomas Werner

Thomas Werner (BioSci) will present today (Nov. 10) as part of the Department of Biological Sciences (BioSci) Seminar Series.

Werner's presentation will take place from 3-4 p.m. in person in the Great Lakes Research Center, GLRC 202, and virtually via Zoom.

The title of his presentation is "The Making of a Fruit Fly Encyclopedia: Adventures of a Mobile Fruit Fly laboratory in the Northwestern Wilderness."

From the abstract:
Dr. Werner is the author of the “The Encyclopedia of North American Drosophilids”, consisting of two open-access volumes “Drosophilids of the Midwest and Northeast (Vol. 1)” and “Drosophilids of the Southeast (Vol. 2)”. To expand on his work and cover the fruit flies of the northwestern United States, he took a mobile fruit fly lab with imaging capability on a 6000 mile, 5-week road-trip that yielded 3500 fruit flies belonging to 21 species, many of which will adorn the next encyclopedia volume. Dr. Werner will both talk about these amazing fly species and give a virtual tour of his incredible mobile lab. Over the past century, several big fruit fly collection trips were carried out by other scientists; however, nobody has ever taken a lab with this imaging functionality on the road before, which makes this trip unique.
