For example, users have downloaded Michigan Tech master’s theses, master’s reports and dissertations over 1.5 million times from 227 different countries. The dashboard even reveals that a majority of this traffic is coming directly from Google, evidence of the platform’s successful search engine optimization efforts. What this means is Michigan Tech’s newest scholars can be confident that when they include their works in Digital Commons @ Michigan Tech, their scholarship will reach those searching for it, globally.

As a whole, the collection is the downloaded part of the repository, and individually, the top 10 dissertations, theses and reports have over 10,000 hits each. The top 10 visited submissions are:

See Yourself in Cyber: Email Security

Michigan Tech is proud to be a Cybersecurity Awareness partner with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA). This year’s campaign theme is “See Yourself in Cyber.”

Cybersecurity may seem like a complex subject, but ultimately, it’s all about people. This month we’re sharing tips to help you make smart decisions about cybersecurity at work, home and school.

Can you recognize a phishing email? This is when cybercriminals use fake emails, social media posts or direct messages to lure you into clicking on a bad link or downloading a malicious attachment. This week, we will discuss email security, including phishing and how you can identify and deal with these types of emails. Learn more on our Cybersecurity page.

Stay safe! If you have any questions about cybersecurity, we can help. Email us at it-help@mtu.edu or call 7-1111.

CTL Instructional Award: Kristin Brzeski

The Jackson Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) will recognize Kristin Brzeski (CFRES) as co-recipient of the CTL Instructional Award for Innovative or Out of Class Teaching on Oct. 27 at 3:45 p.m. (rescheduled from earlier this month). Brzeski was selected for the award after being nominated via the Deans’ Teaching Showcase during the spring 2022 semester.

Please plan to join us in recognizing Brzeski by registering for the event.

Brzeski’s presentation: "Integrating regional natural resource partners into lab and field based learning."

From the abstract:
Dr. Kristin Brzeski will share her experiences developing and funding a field and wet-lab based component in her wildlife courses. In this presentation, Dr. Brzeski will emphasize how she integrates partnerships with the MI Department of Natural Resources (DNR) into her instruction, where students generate data that is presented directly to DNR biologists. Through this process, students get hands-on field and lab based training while actively participating in the process of translating research for applied management. Students also get tips and advice for advancing their careers with land-management organizations such as the DNR.

Soccer Tallies Second, Third Straight Wins

Michigan Tech soccer put two games in the win column over the weekend, and have now won three straight.

The Huskies earned their second straight win in 2-0 fashion over Parkside on Friday (Oct. 14) at Kearly Stadium. Tech's two goals were scored by Mia Van der Heide in the 38th minute and defender Ella Roach in the 58th minute.

"It's exciting to have two first-career goals," head coach Bulut Ozturk said. "Mia really gave us the boost that we needed and Ella showed the aggressiveness that she talks about being inside the six."

The Huskies followed up with another 2-0 victory against Purdue Northwest on Sunday (Oct. 16) at Kearly Stadium to close a four-game homestand.

"We got our sweep this weekend and we're scoring multiple goals in every match now," Ozturk said. "I'm extremely proud of my team and we're in the mix for a third-place finish in the GLIAC — it's very rewarding and I'm very happy for them."

"Right now we have everyone stepping in and stepping up and we don't have to rely on just one person," Ozturk continued. "In the last three games we've had six goals, and on the flip side we got our eighth shutout, and I hope that can continue in our last three overall matches. This is when we need to be playing our very best."

Volleyball Goes 2-1 at Midwest Crossover

The Michigan Tech volleyball team fought back from an early sweep, coming home with two wins from the Midwest Region Crossover Tournament.

Tech split day one at tournament on Friday (Oct. 14). The Huskies fell 3-0 to Ashland in the afternoon match and then won their 13th match of the season with a 3-2 victory over Indianapolis in the evening.

"What a great way to end a very long day of volleyball," coach Matt Jennings said. "While this afternoon's match was a tough one against a red-hot Ashland team, tonight's against Indy was a really great battle, and I'm proud of the way we hung in there and finished. A well-played and hard-fought five-set win to close out was great to see. I was thrilled to see the toughness out there and really liked the way we responded when Indy was pushing us into a fifth set. To come out and take command early in the final set was impressive."

The Huskies swept Cedarville on Saturday (Oct. 15) to wrap up the tournament. The Huskies won 25-21, 25-17 and 25-19 to improve to 14-7 overall and wrap up nonconference play with an 8-2 mark.

"We came out sharp and did a good job maintaining a solid attack and strong serving all match," Jennings said. "The serve-pass game was really strong again. We continue to get better at passing the ball and serving tough. Our defense keeps coming up with the stops when we need them and big plays when we need them. Carissa (Beyer) is playing lights-out defense right now, which has been a big part of the way we've been playing of late."

Hockey Completes Alaska Sweep with 6-2 Win

Michigan Tech hockey completed a nonconference sweep of Alaska with a 6-2 victory Friday (Oct. 14) at the Carlson Center.

Nick Nardella had three assists, and six different Huskies scored as the Black and Gold improved to 2-1 on the season.

"The third period was our best period, and we were able to take the wind out of their sail after that sixth goal," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "I'm proud of the effort, and it always feels good to win. Nardella was outstanding tonight. He competed all game, and I thought we got outstanding goaltending. Blake (Pietila) played huge."

The Huskies won the first game in the series 2-0 on Thursday (Oct. 13).

Football Wins 12th Straight Miner's Cup

Darius Willis corralled two touchdown catches and the Husky defense limited Northern Michigan to 220 yards of total offense as Michigan Tech football won its 12th straight Miner's Cup on Saturday (Oct. 15) at chilly Kearly Stadium in GLIAC football.

The final score was 21-7. Braxton Blackwell added a first-half interception and Brandon Michalak tacked on a touchdown catch for the Huskies in front of 1,629 fans.

"I'm really proud of this group," Blackwell said. "We prepared the most for this game and it means a lot. It was important for us to come out and play well for four quarters and I thought we did that today for the first time this season."

Together, the Huskies counted up to 12 as they received the 20-year-old trophy following the game.

"We knew it wasn't going to be easy," said defensive coordinator Bryan Thomas. "Northern did some things we didn't see on film during the week and battled their tails off out there. So credit to our guys for making the right adjustments and then figuring out a way to win in the end."
