MTU Career Fair Returns to Keweenaw

A Career Services student coach sits in the commons area with her laptop ready to help fellow students get ready for Career Fair

It’s been two years since students trekked up MacInnes Drive to the SDC, decked out in their business best, to shake hands with their futures. In-person Career Fair returns Wednesday, running from 2-7 p.m. Recruiters from more than 350 companies are planning to attend. Hundreds of follow-up interviews will take place around campus the following day and virtually afterward.

The event is a major factor in Tech’s 93% average job placement rate within six months of graduation. There are no statistics on how many meals and memories will be shared, but it’s safe to say that lodging and dining establishments are rolling out the welcome mat for new and returning visitors.

"We’re excited for the return of Tech’s Career Fair, as it brings in visitors from across the country seeking to recruit our talented MTU students,” said Brad Barnett, executive director of Keweenaw Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Find out more about the event’s impact on the community and how students are getting ready for what may be their first in-person Career Fair in the full story on Michigan Tech News.

Cliff Drive One-way Thursday

Thursday (Sept. 22) Cliff Drive will function as a one-way eastbound roadway. Starting at 7:30 a.m., all traffic accessing Cliff Drive must enter at the west entrance near the Administration Building and exit at the east end near the Rozsa Center. The south lane of Cliff Drive will be open for one-way, eastbound traffic only, while the north lane will be closed to accommodate the parking needs of more than 1,000 recruiters.

More than 350 recruiting organizations will be conducting student interviews throughout campus the day after Career Fair. Public safety officers will patrol Cliff Drive for any hazards throughout the day.

Career Services thanks Transportation Services for helping accommodate parking for our corporate guests with minimal disruption to campus operations. Your patience, understanding and hospitality towards Michigan Tech's corporate guests is what makes the Keweenaw their favorite recruiting destination.

Fourth Annual People of the Heart Water Walk to Take Place in the Keweenaw

The People of the Heart Water Walkers will host the fourth annual Water Walk to honor water gifts Oct. 8-10.

Water Walkers will walk nearly 90 miles through the Keweenaw Peninsula and along Gichigami. The walk will begin at sunrise at Sandpoint Lighthouse in Baraga and conclude at the Copper Harbor Lighthouse at Astor Shipwreck Park in Copper Harbor.

The Water Walk is conducted through Anishinaabe ceremonial protocol with traditional understandings of the natural environment. Anishinaabekweg from the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community will assist in the walk. In this work, women lead the ceremony carrying a copper vessel filled with nibi, the Anishinaabe word for water. The water continually moves through the 1842 ceded territory throughout the day. An eagle staff is carried beside them as protector.

The conclusion of the three-day event coincides with Indigenous Peoples’ Day. This annual day of celebration, which falls on Monday, Oct. 10, honors the peoples, histories and cultures of Indigenous populations across the Americas.

The Michigan Tech Writing Center is a Water Walk sponsor. Past sponsors include the Indigenous Peoples’ Day Campaign of Upper Michigan, the Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region, the Copper Harbor Improvement Association and the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community.

For more information, visit our Facebook page.

People of the Heart Water Walkers joins those of all colors, faiths and philosophies to work together for life’s most precious gift: nibi.

'Arabesque: The Art of Clement Yeh and Tomas Co' Opens Friday

The Rozsa Galleries open their fall exhibit, "Arabesque: The Art of Clement Yeh and Tomas Co," this Friday (Sept. 23). Focused on dance and movement, Arabesque brings the works of Canadian artist Clement Yeh and local artist and Michigan Tech Professor Emeritus Tomas Co.

Yeh’s piece, "Movement in Time and Space," is an immersive drawing environment stretching 56 feet long and six feet tall. A member of the Visual Arts faculty at Thompson Rivers University in British Columbia, Canada, Yeh’s practice focuses on drawing, sculpture, and drafting. He is a passionate advocate for the supporting the role that art plays in personal growth, confronting social issues, and uplifting the quality of life in society.

Co is a contemporary local artist whose work began as watercolor and sumi-e ink paintings and later expanded into sculptural and digital art. Although his primary career was as a chemical engineering professor at Michigan Tech, Co has kept an active parallel artistic endeavor. His work has appeared in local solo exhibits and a few juried shows nationally. His artistic motivation is to satisfy a need for personal expression and a need to make sense of the confusing, exciting, yet sometimes depressing current events and human conditions. His metal sculptures, featured in "Arabesque," are symbolic representations of the fluidity of dance.

Inspired by ballet and dance, you can meet Yeh and Co during an artist reception that will precede the Oct. 28 performance of American Ballet Theatre at the Rozsa. Plan to enjoy refreshments, meet the artists in a relaxed environment and learn about how they go from inspiration to the final pieces you see.

DETAILS

  • Exhibit: "Arabesque: The Art of Clement Yeh and Tomas Co"
  • Dates: Friday, Sept. 23, through Friday, Nov. 4
  • Location: Rozsa Galleries A-Space, lower level of the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts
  • Artist Reception: 5-7 p.m. Friday, Oct 28, in the Rozsa Galleries

CEGE Alumni Seminar with Brad Diener: The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act - Transportation Industry Implications

The Department of Civil, Environmental and Geospatial Engineering invites you to the alumni seminar "The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act – Transportation Industry Implications," led by Brad Diener.

The virtual seminar will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 22) via Zoom.

The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) is the largest federal investment in public transit ever while also being the largest dedicated bridge investment since the construction of the Interstate System. With approximately $550 billion in new federal spending, this historic legislation will significantly impact the transportation industry.

Over the next five years, Michigan is estimated to see an additional $1.7 billion in federal funding for transportation projects, with an additional $563 million dedicated to bridge repair or replacement projects. Additionally, competitive grant programs will allow Michigan to capture further federal dollars. Listen as Brad Diener from the Walbec Group talks about the IIJA and the implications he is expecting for the transportation industry.

About Brad Diener, Area Manager for Zenith Tech – A Walbec Company: As area manager of the bridge division for Zenith Tech, Brad is responsible for providing leadership to the project management team as they complete complex heavy civil structure projects throughout Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota.

CTL Fall 2022 Lunch and Learn: iClicker Showcase

Join your colleagues and the CTL team on Tuesday Oct. 18, as we revive our lunch and learn format with an iClicker Showcase. We’re looking for up to five instructors to share one of their favorite iClicker polling questions, review the pedagogy supporting it and discuss the impact on learning that they’ve observed.

Now that Michigan Tech has a campus-wide iClicker Cloud license, we’re seeing a large increase in adoption by instructors this fall based on early usage data. iClicker polling is a great way to engage your students in class, and increase learning and retention. How can you enhance your pedagogical strategies for iClicker polling in your classroom? We are curious to know how you use iClicker polling.

iClicker instructors are encouraged to apply to participate in the showcase. Applications are due by October 7! You’ll be asked to submit a single slide polling question and a brief description of how you deliver the question in your class.

Submissions will be reviewed for uniqueness (including use of the various question types: short answer, target question, multiple answer, numerical, multiple choice), as well as adaptability for other instructors. In addition to recognition as an iClicker expert, featured showcase instructors will also receive a gift card.

Whether you're new to iClicker this semester, a power user or just want to learn ways to improve and expand your teaching practices, make plans to register and attend the CTL iClicker Showcase. All registered attendees will have lunch provided. As always, instructors who need assistance getting started with iClicker or have specific technical questions can contact the CTL for assistance: elearning@mtu.edu or 487-3000.

Huskies, Cardinals Play to Scoreless Draw

The Michigan Tech women's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw with Saginaw Valley State under the lights at Kearly Stadium on Friday evening (Sept. 16).

The Huskies (3-3-1, 1-1-1) took nine shots, landing three on target but were unable to find the back of the net. The Cardinals (3-2-2, 1-1-1) totaled 13 shots, but senior goalkeeper Gracie Vanlangevelde and the Huskies backline would keep a clean sheet by the contest's conclusion.

"Home field advantage is always huge," head coach Bulut Ozturk said. "Our team enjoys these big matches, credit to our women, we came out to play and it was a fair result today."

Volleyball Sweeps LSSU for GLIAC Home Win

Mustangs Steal Late Victory from Huskies

Midwestern State's Melik Owens picked off Will Ark and took it 52-yards across the line to steal victory from Michigan Tech football 28-21 Saturday night at Memorial Stadium. The Huskies led for 49 minutes but allowed the Mustangs to score 21 fourth-quarter points as they fell to 1-2 in non-conference play.

The longest road trip in team history began well for Michigan Tech. The Huskies held the Mustangs to 13 yards passing in the first half, recovered a fumble, and staked a 14-7 lead. Hunter Beuchel recorded his first career interception nearing the end of the first quarter and Ark connected with Brandon Michalak for a 43-yard touchdown to cap an 11-play, 91-yard drive, which burned 6:15 off the clock.

Michigan Tech Drops Back-And-Forth Match Against Ferris State

The Michigan Tech women's soccer team fell to Ferris State 1-0, at Kearly Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Huskies (3-4-1, 1-2-1) were outshot by the Bulldogs (2-3-2, 1-1-2) 12-9, although both teams only tallied three shots on goal.

"Every match is tough in the GLIAC," head coach Turk Ozturk said. "It's still early in the season, unfortunately, we weren't able to get the result today, Ferris did a great job and once they scored that goal they picked up the momentum."
