Lina Espejo-Ramirez Named GLIAC Setter of the Week

Michigan Tech volleyball's Lina Espejo-Ramirez has been named the GLIAC Setter of the Week.

Espejo-Ramirez averaged 9.58 assists and 2.92 digs per set during the Huskies' 4-0 sweep of the Otter Invitational in California over the weekend — with all four wins in straight sets. She was named to the all-tournament team.

Espejo-Ramirez had a pair of double-doubles at the tournament, including a Tech career-high 33 assists while adding 11 digs in MTU's 3-0 sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills. She tallied 115 assists, 35 digs, eight kills, six blocks and four aces on the weekend.

Volleyball Rises to No. 19, Prepares for Parkside's Hampton Inn Invite

After sweeping the Otter Invitational in California over the weekend, Michigan Tech volleyball rose to No. 19 in this week's AVCA Division II Coaches Poll.

The No. 19 ranking is the highest for the Huskies since 1996. Tech was ranked No. 23 in the 2022 Preseason Poll and ended 2021 at No. 22.

The Black and Gold will travel to Kenosha, Wisconsin, for Parkside's Hampton Inn Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Sept. 3-4). Tech opens against Upper Iowa (2 p.m. ET) and McKendree (6 p.m.) on Friday, and then wraps up the weekend versus Illinois Springfield (10 a.m.) and Minnesota Crookston (6 p.m.) Saturday.

Michigan Tech football starts the season at home tomorrow (Sept. 1) on Teacher Appreciation Night at Kearly Stadium. Local educators can buy a ticket and get one free by using the code HuskiesLoveTeachers at BuyHuskiesTickets.com

Michigan Tech football welcomes University of Wisconsin-Platteville at 6 p.m. to kick off their 2022 campaign. Last season, the Huskies finished 5-2 in the GLIAC for third place in the conference.

On the Road

Assistant Professor Kathryn Perrine (Chem) presented at the fall 2022 American Chemical Society meeting, held Aug. 21-25.

Perrine presented with co-author and graduate student Chathura de Alwis on specific cation effects on the direct CO2 capture at the air/electrolyte/iron interface.

This work was supported by the NASA Michigan Space Grant Consortium award NNX15AJ20H, the NSF CHE 1725818, the Michigan Tech 2020 Research Excellence Fund and the David J. and Valeria Pruett Graduate Research Fellowship.

Perrine also presented the group’s research on the interaction of monochloramine solutions on iron interfaces in complex environments. Students who participated in the project are acknowledged: graduate students Chathura de Alwis and Subash Pandey, as well as undergraduate students Danica Lemmons, Ryan Mackie and Drew Kolodge.

This work is supported by the NSF CHE 2108316. Lemmons is also supported by the Rebecca Sandretto and Susan Stackhouse Summer Research Fellowship.

The workshop will touch on regulating autonomous and intelligent maritime systems, the coalition and the Marine Autonomous Research Site at the GLRC.

The entry announced the John and Phyllis Seaman Endowment for Curation at the A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum and the establishment of a Student Support Fund in honor of former curator Jean Peterman Kemp Zimmer ’39 and John “Jack” Seaman's sister, Jeanne Seaman Farnum. 

The announcement included a photograph of Jack and Phyllis, along with John Jaszczak (Mineral Museum/Physics) and Bill Roberts (ADV).

Catherine Rono, Melody Li Welcomed as Write-D Facilitators

Writing in the Discipline (Write-D) and the Departments of Biological Sciences; Biomedical Engineering; and Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering welcome Catherine Rono and Miaomiao (Melody) Li as Write-D facilitators beginning in the fall 2022 semester.

Write-D provides a dedicated time and space for graduate students to get work done and receive support on writing projects within their discipline, such as manuscripts, research proposals, etc. Guest speakers from the department and industry visit to present briefly on research, writing and publishing tips.
