New Library Guide for DEIS Resources

The Van Pelt and Opie Library, in consultation with the Office of the Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion (OVPDI), has developed a new Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Resource Guide, which will help students, faculty and staff access important materials related to diversity, equity, inclusion and sense of belonging (DEIS).

The guide is organized into subsections by topic, including race and ethnicity, gender, LGBTQIA+, disability, nationality and general resources. By providing book recommendations, journal articles and other resources in one location, the guide serves as a consolidated source to find DEIS information. Most materials are either open access or available through the library’s collection.

“Michigan Tech is committed to increasing diversity, equity and inclusion across campus,'' commented Jenn Sams, assistant director of the library. “This site is a living, evolving compilation of resources — including articles, websites, videos, podcasts and more — on a range of DEI topics for you to explore.”

Resources will be continually added and reviewed by library staff to ensure quality and relevance. Michigan Tech students, faculty and staff are encouraged to suggest additional resources using the “Suggest a DEI Resource” form embedded in the guide's left sidebar.

We invite the Michigan Tech community to use these resources to facilitate their DEIS research and to help implement our DEIS goals across the University.

Preparing for a Classroom Emergency

Preparing for the evacuation of a building is an important component of being an instructor. Students, even in the university setting, will look to instructors for guidance during an emergency. Michigan Tech requires faculty and instructors to take a few minutes at the beginning of each semester to familiarize themselves and students with basic evacuation routes and emergency procedures.

What specifically should instructors do?

  • Familiarize themselves with the building, floor and classroom they will be teaching in. Classrooms are equipped with emergency evacuation postings; use these to orient yourself to exit locations.
  • Communicate evacuation routes and assembly areas outside of buildings to students in case of an emergency.
  • Remind students that if they need assistance exiting a building during an emergency, it is up to them to self-identify (in private if desired).
  • Provide leadership and follow established procedures for all building alarms and emergencies.

The University Safety Manual provides additional information regarding emergency action and fire prevention plans.

Please email ehs-help@mtu.edu if you would like your classroom evacuation maps in PDF format.

Soccer Falls to Bulldogs, Defeats St. Cloud State

The Michigan Tech women's soccer team lost a heartbreaker to Minnesota Duluth on Thursday (Aug. 25), then turned on the offense to defeat St. Cloud State on Saturday (Aug. 27).

The Huskies fell 2-1 to Minnesota Duluth at James S. Malosky Stadium in Duluth, Minnesota, on Thursday. A late push by UMD in the last 10 minutes of regulation was the decider, with the Bulldogs tying the game in the 82nd minute, then taking the lead with five seconds remaining in the contest.

On Saturday, the Huskies' strong offensive play over the middle portion of the second half pushed them past St. Cloud State, 2-0, in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

"It was very nice to see the quick turnaround from our young women from Thursday night's heartbreak loss," head coach Bulut Ozturk said. "This is a group that has amazing team chemistry and it showed again today in the second half."

Tech moves to 1-1 in the early season.

Volleyball Sweeps Otter Invitational; Jillian Kuizenga Named MVP

The No. 23-ranked Michigan Tech volleyball team kicked off the 2022 season with four sweeps and first place at the Otter Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Aug. 26-27).

Tech's outside hitter, Jillian Kuizenga, was named the tournament MVP, and Kuizenga, setter Lina Espejo-Ramirez and libero Carissa Beyer were also named to the all-tournament team.

The Huskies earned their first two sweeps on Friday, defeating Cal Poly Pomona and Academy of Art. "I thought the first match came down to winning the serve-pass game," said coach Matt Jennings. "Our serving was on point and we passed well enough to side out pretty consistently. We were good out of system and played some pretty tough defense."

"To hold on and sweep match two was nice to see," Jennings added. "I thought we did a good job staying poised and working through some of the early-season pieces that all teams are working on at this point."

On Saturday, the Huskies swept Cal State Dominguez Hills and tournament host Cal State Monterey Bay to finish 4-0 at the tournament — all in straight sets.

"What a great day to be a Husky," Jennings said. "We're super happy to come out of this weekend undefeated and having come together more as a group."

When departments advertise open positions, some external websites allow applicants to submit application materials directly via that website. However, all Michigan Tech employment applications must be submitted through Human Resources' Michigan Tech Employment website.

When you post to external websites that permit application submission, you should include wording directly in your posting that states:

“Application materials submitted through this website will not be reviewed. You must apply on Michigan Tech's employment website to be considered for the position. Submit your application materials for this position using the following URL: [Insert the full URL for your position].”

Applications and materials received through any website other than the Michigan Tech Employment website cannot be reviewed, as those websites do not meet all of the obligations that we must follow as a federal contractor. In order to remain in compliance with the regulations, the University can only accept and review applications submitted via our employment website.

If applicants submit application materials via the website that you are using for advertising, you may contact the applicants and tell them their materials will not be reviewed unless submitted via the Michigan Tech Employment website. If you choose to contact the applicants, you must contact all of the applicants; otherwise, none of the applicants can be contacted.

Also, if your department has been receiving and reviewing applications through a website other than the Michigan Tech Employment website, please email Equal Opportunity Compliance and Title IX at eocompliance@mtu.edu so we can remedy the situation and ensure compliance with the federal regulations moving forward.
