Alumnus Donates 47-Foot Catamaran to Michigan Tech

Boaters on the Keweenaw Waterway and those passing by the north side of campus may notice a new vessel moored at the Great Lakes Research Center (GLRC).

Gary Hagstrom ’72 donated his 47-foot catamaran, previously named Crackerjack, to Michigan Tech. This newest vessel to join the University’s fleet will be renamed Lupine and will enhance research capabilities for students and researchers on the Great Lakes.

Duo Authentication for On-Domain Systems

Michigan Tech IT will be turning on Duo authentication for administrative access for on-domain systems. The extra Duo authentication will only be required when signing in as an administrator and should not affect normal use. It does have a side effect of creating a pause of approximately 10 seconds after an incorrect password is entered before a user can attempt to sign in again.

The changes are part of our continuing efforts to be in compliance with both our cyber insurance requirements and the upcoming Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) requirements for any federal research.

If you have any questions, we can help. Contact IT at it-help@mtu.edu or call 906-487-1111.

Weeklong STEM Internship Pairs High School Students with MTU Faculty

Five high school students participated in the weeklong summer STEM Internship at Michigan Tech, held July 18-22.

The students came from Detroit and Houghton. During the five-day science and engineering internship program, the students were paired with MTU faculty with a variety of expertise and research interests.

Students worked in the lab and/or in the field, toured campus, lived in a dorm, ate in the dining hall and met students from around Michigan and beyond. They each received a $900 scholarship to cover their meals, lodging and transportation on a Michigan Tech coach bus.

Daisuke Minikata (CEGE) hosted two interns in his lab, supervised by graduate students Rose Daily, Benjamin Cerda Barrios and Ben Morhardt. High school students Michelle Simpkins and Eural Johnson learned about PFAS contamination by sampling local bodies of water and using the Orbitrap for qualitative identification. Additionally, they built PFAS molecules in ChemDraw 3D, toured the wastewater treatment plant and MTU Sustainability Demonstration House, and became familiar with careers in environmental engineering. Simpkins attends UPrep Academy for Math & Science and Johnson attends Cass Tech.

Kuilin Zhang (CEGE) hosted high school student Omaree Ishmael, who used a traffic counter app to collect traffic data at Sharon Avenue and M-26 intersection. He then used the data to create a signalized intersection model using PTV VISSIM — a multimodal traffic flow simulation software package — and performed the CAV (connected and automated vehicles) cooperative driving automation simulation.

Lastly, Evan Kane at the USDA and postdoc Julia Stuart hosted two interns, Nora Sullivan and Bryson Taylor. Sullivan attends Houghton High School and Taylor attends Davis Aerospace Academy. They learned how to conduct an N2 fixation in the field and a glucose assay in the lab, and visited the Nastoria bog field research site.

On the last day of their internship, students summarized the skills and knowledge that they had gained throughout the week in a presentation to fellow interns, hosts and their parents, who joined virtually.

Students had this to say about their internship experience:

  • "I learned how wastewater will change how the water is used in the world."
  • "Our visit to the bog was very interesting."
  • "Learning and experiencing new things!!"
  • "Faculty and graduate students were always willing to answer my questions."

One student’s comment wraps it up: “Everything was great!

Three of the five say they are now more seriously considering Michigan Tech after their internship experience.

The high school STEM Internship program is coordinated by Michigan Tech's Center for Science and Environmental Outreach, with funding from the National Science Foundation; MTU Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering; USDA Forest Research Lab; Raytheon; and the Shannon Foundation.
