Seven Things to Try this AAPI Heritage Month

Our Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) colleagues are an essential part of our community. Representing a multitude of ethnicities, experiences and cultures, AAPI communities have a long history of dedicated service and advocacy within the U.S. and also here in the Keweenaw. Yet this history is stained with anti-Asian bias, xenophobia and violence. And this anti-Asian bias is rising.

How can you help? Where do you start? Guest contributors Tim Raymond and Liz Fujita suggest self-education as a great place to begin. Take a look at seven things to try this month on the Diversity and Inclusion Newsblog — and share with a friend!

Phishing Campaign Awareness

Michigan Tech will be expanding an ongoing phishing campaign to include all full-time and part-time employees of the University. This campaign sends out a simple phishing email to a random selection of individuals each business day. The process also guarantees that once you have received a message from the campaign, you will not receive another related email until the full population has been exhausted.

This exercise is a requirement of our insurance company and is considered a security best practice. Statistically, over 90% of data breaches start with a phishing attack. No individual metrics are being reported.

As with all potential phishing messages, IT strongly recommends sending a copy to Michigan Tech IT for evaluation.

On the (Virtual) Road

Don Lafreniere and Sarah Fayen Scarlett (SS) and Lindsay Hiltunen (Library) presented at the National Council on Public History’s Annual Meeting on Monday (May 2).

Their roundtable, “Preserving Memory, Protecting Privacy: Challenges and Strategies for Working through Community Anxiety in Digital Environments” comprised scholars from History Colorado, St. Mary’s University, Virginia Commonwealth University and Université du Québec à Montréal.

The session included discussions of Michigan Tech’s Keweenaw Time Traveler and the Mapping Miners project, along with diverse digital humanities and public history projects from the other presenters. Hiltunen wrapped the session with a paper on the role of memory in public history projects and facilitated a lively Q&A.

This session was originally planned to be in person at the Montreal conference, but COVID concerns sent the meeting to a virtual platform.
