PhD Defense: Beth Bartel, GMES

Ph.D. in Geology candidate Beth Bartel will present her dissertation proposal defense at 3 p.m. today (April 28) via Zoom.

Bartel's dissertation is titled "Reducing Risk to Rapid- and Slow-onset Environmental Hazards in Rural Central America."

From the abstract:
This dissertation proposal outlines a plan to study risk reduction to specific hazards in rural Central America through two separate case studies. Case One investigates information availability and decision-making processes for evacuation related to pyroclastic flows at Volcán de Fuego, Guatemala. Case Two examines disparate community responses to drought adaptation interventions in the municipality of California, El Salvador. Both case studies will draw on a multi-method research approach spanning the social and geosciences. The research overall aims to improve our understanding of effective risk reduction strategies for living with sudden and slow changes in our environment.

PhD Defense: Rachel Rulison, GMES

Ph.D. in Geology candidate Rachel Rulison will present their defense at 3 p.m. today (April 28) in Dow 610.

Rulison is defending two different projects, titled "Defining the Endmember System of US Soils and Quantifying Relationships," and "A Hyperspectral Approach to the Alteration Strength Index."

From the first abstract:
Using geochemical data obtained by the USGS, the surficial soils of the US were defined by a 13-endmember system using Polytopic Vector Analysis and mapped in GIS. Correlation matrices provided correlation coefficients for elements in the Top 5 cm soil profile, the A horizon, and the C horizon. The Top 5 cm element concentrations were also correlated with the endmembers, and geographical data for land cover, soil order, and soil pH. The quantification of these relationships supported many of the spatial patterns shown in maps and provided insight into other relationships, especially where qualitative correlation is weaker.

From the second abstract:
The high spectral resolution of hyperspectral imagery has provided revolutionary advancements in many fields, including mineral identification. Hyperspectral core data from the company Corescan allowed for quantifiable mineral proportions for core sections from Karaha Telaga-Bodas, in Indonesia, and Lake City Caldera, in Colorado. The Alteration Strength Index (ASI) is a value based on mineral parameters that correlate to rock strength. The incorporation of hyperspectral data in the ASI aimed to improve the accuracy of the mineralogical parameters and provide more reliable strength data which in turn would reduce the need for time-consuming lab testing.

SDC Closure Planned May 1-8

As we come to the end of the spring 2022 semester at Michigan Tech, we have a few important dates to share regarding planned maintenance and general projects in the SDC as we make the transition to summer beginning Saturday (April 30).

  • Friday, April 29 — Last day of spring semester building operations.
  • Saturday, April 30 — SDC closed for MTU Spring Commencement.
  • Sunday to Sunday, May 1-8 — SDC closed.
  • Monday to Sunday, May 9-15 — SDC partially reopens with reduced hours in some areas.
  • Monday, May 16 — All areas of the SDC reopen.

Visit the Michigan Tech Recreation website for more details on the SDC closure, including what areas will be open May 9-15 and their hours. Planned maintenance and general projects taking place during the SDC closure are also listed.

Thank you for your patience during this short interruption as we work through much-needed projects. Current SDC members will be granted complimentary access to Gates Tennis Center and the Michigan Tech Trails from Saturday (April 30) to May 15. In addition, select areas in the SDC will remain available on a reduced schedule; therefore, requests for SDC membership extension will not be accepted.

We view this temporary shutdown as a way to make a positive impact on multiple areas of the facility without causing additional unplanned closures and disruptions. We stand by our commitment to make improvements to our facility that will benefit our users today and into the future.

The SDC will reopen fully on May 16, with summer hours in place through Aug. 29. Please note that the SDC and the Gates Tennis Center will be closed on May 30 and July 4 for University recognized holidays.

Work on US-41 Road Project Resumes in May

US-41 Road Project construction is scheduled to resume Monday (May 2). Work being done this summer will not impact traffic flow on the Michigan Tech main campus, but rerouting will impact the normal traffic flow of College Avenue and could affect those coming to and leaving campus.

Facilities Management will share pertinent project announcements and traffic rerouting information on the US-41 Road Project webpage.

Drivers and pedestrians are reminded to stay alert while in and around construction zones, and to follow all appropriate directions and be aware of changing traffic patterns.
