Shooting Struggles Trip Up Women's Basketball

Michigan Tech women's basketball struggled with shooting Saturday and Sunday (Dec. 18 and 19), losing both games during the road trip.

The Huskies couldn't keep up with No. 2 Drury University, losing 79-62 to the Panthers Saturday in nonconference basketball at O'Reilly Events Center. In particular, a 17-1 third-quarter run by Drury buried MTU.

Ellie Mackay posted 18 points in the loss for Tech and shot 7-for-14 from the field. The Huskies shot 40% overall but were 5-for-27 on 3-point tries.

"I was super proud of how we came out and held Drury to nine points in the first quarter," said head coach Sam Clayton. "I thought even in the second quarter, we had just a couple of miscues and were pretty sharp defensively. The biggest thing is just taking care of the basketball.

"When you take of the ball, you can stop them, but when we turn it over, that's when they score and go on their runs," Clayton continued. "We looked like two completely different teams from the first half to the second. Somehow our mindset changed and we made 15 turnovers in the second half. Drury didn't drastically change their defense, so ultimately it's on us to be better."

The Huskies' shooting struggles continued Sunday in a 75-59 road loss to Lindenwood University at Hyland Arena.

The Lions outscored Tech by a 26-13 margin in the second quarter. Mackay had 26 points for MTU in the loss, which was the Huskies' first time losing three straight games this season.

Michigan Tech (8-4, 3-1) returns to conference play on Jan. 6 when they host Wisconsin-Parkside at 5:30 p.m. at SDC Gymnasium.

Reminders

Face Coverings Required Indoors on Campus

While Michigan Tech is at Health and Safety Level Two, face coverings must be worn indoors. This applies to all students, employees and visitors, regardless of vaccination status.

Michigan Tech strongly recommends that all employees and students continue with handwashing and hand-sanitizing practices, especially in light of the virulence of the COVID-19 delta variant. Please be aware that if you are exposed to COVID-19, quarantine guidelines vary depending on vaccination status.

In Level Two, students and employees are not required to monitor their symptoms daily prior to coming to campus. But, individuals should be mindful of their own symptoms. A useful monitoring tool is available from the CDC.
