Faculty Mentors Needed for MiCUP Scholars Program

The Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) is seeking faculty to serve as mentors for the 2021 MiCUP Scholars Program. This program targets low-income, underrepresented, first-generation students who wish to continue their education beyond community college — with a focus on STEM disciplines.

The 2021 MiCUP program offers a seven-week summer experience (May 10 to June 25) that addresses the opportunities and challenges students face as they pursue a bachelor’s degree. Faculty mentors in the program will assist students with research projects in engineering, technology, business, computer science and health sciences.

All faculty interested in facilitating undergraduate research with MiCUP program participants should contact Christopher Sanders or call 906-487-2920. More information about the MiCUP program can be found on the CDI web page.

Faculty Handbook Referendum Voting Results

As a result of the recent University-wide referendum, Section 2.5: Role of Innovation and Commercialization and Section 2.6: Role of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion have been approved by the tenured and tenure-track faculty for inclusion in the Faculty Handbook.

The referendum passed with a yes vote of 69%. The sections now move forward for approval by the Provost and President. Final approval rests with the Board of Trustees.

ADVANCE Weekly Roundup: Gender Inequities in Academic Medicine, Life Sciences

You may have read the article in the New York Times that came out recently about women physicians earning $2 million less over their lifetimes than men physicians.

This study and a variety of research topics on gender inequities within medicine and the academic life sciences are discussed in a recent Freakonomics MD podcast led by Dr. Bapu Jena of Harvard University. For example, the tendency of men researchers to “upsell” their research contributions within their academic papers with superlatives like novel, unique and unprecedented is one factor thought to contribute to differences in citation rates, which are key drivers of pay differences between men and women. The podcast also addresses other issues that have significant repercussions for equity in career advancement in STEM fields. It is well worth a listen.

Today’s feature was shared with us by Robert Hutchinson. If you have an article you think we should feature, please email it to advance-mtu@mtu.edu and we will consider adding it to the ADVANCE Weekly Roundup.

The ADVANCE Weekly Roundup is brought to you by ADVANCE at Michigan Tech, an NSF-funded initiative dedicated to improving faculty career success, retention, diversity, equity and inclusion. Past articles are available on the ADVANCE Newsblog.

Men's Basketball Downs Finlandia, Will Not Face Winona State

Michigan Tech's men's basketball team won by a huge margin against Finlandia University on Wednesday (Dec. 15) and had its upcoming game against Winona State canceled.

Dominating the offensive glass, Michigan Tech took down Finlandia University 122-52 at SDC Gymnasium in nonconference action.

The Huskies used a 10-0 run to open a 32-point gap at halftime and cruised the rest of the way to improve to 7-3 (3-1 GLIAC). Tech is 3-1 on their current homestand. Finlandia dropped to 1-12 with their seventh straight defeat.

The Huskies' game against Winona State, which was scheduled for Monday (Dec. 20), has been canceled due to COVID-19 testing results within the Warriors' program.

Data privacy precludes further comment on the issue. Any additional updates or adjustments to Michigan Tech's men's basketball schedule will be made at a later time.

Women's Basketball Road Tripping to Missouri

That game will be followed by a matchup against Lindenwood University on Sunday (Dec. 19) at 5 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on Mix 93.5 FM.

The Huskies received votes in this week's Women's Basketball Coaches Association Top-25 Division II Poll.

Reminders

Face Coverings Required Indoors on Campus

While Michigan Tech is at Health and Safety Level Two, face coverings must be worn indoors. This applies to all students, employees and visitors, regardless of vaccination status.

Michigan Tech strongly recommends that all employees and students continue with handwashing and hand-sanitizing practices, especially in light of the virulence of the COVID-19 delta variant. Please be aware that if you are exposed to COVID-19, quarantine guidelines vary depending on vaccination status.

In Level Two, students and employees are not required to monitor their symptoms daily prior to coming to campus. But, individuals should be mindful of their own symptoms. A useful monitoring tool is available from the CDC.
