Campus Phone Maintenance

On Tuesday (Nov. 23) from 10-11 a.m. and 2-3 p.m., Michigan Tech IT will be updating the hardware for our telephone servers.

We expect phones will fail over to redundant systems where available. Voicemail and the auto-attendant that answers 906-487-1885 are not redundant and will be down for 10-15 minutes during these windows.

If you have any questions or concerns, we can help. Contact us at it-help@mtu.edu or call 906-487-1111.

IRS Required Annual W-4 Reminder

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires employers to remind their employees annually to review and make any necessary changes to their Federal W-4 (Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate). This review will help you determine if your filing status and/or number of withholding allowances need to be changed for the new tax year. A review of your state withholding is also recommended.

Employees can view and change their W-4 information in Banweb. Detailed instructions to access your federal and state withholding information can be found by visiting What is Banweb? and clicking on Payroll Information on Banweb.

The IRS offers several online resources to help taxpayers bring taxes paid closer to what is owed. They are available anytime on IRS.gov. They include:

International non-resident employees should use Notice 1392 - Supplemental Form W-4 Instructions for Nonresident Aliens to complete their W-4.

ADVANCE Weekly Roundup: Creating Equitable Systems for Faculty

As pandemic effects continue, fostering equitable climates to retain high-quality faculty and staff is more important than ever. In this week's article, the UMass ADVANCE team outlines four foundational strategies: communication, resources, flexibility and adapting equity-informed strategies.

Meaningful communicative interactions and supportive resources are critical to faculty and staff job satisfaction. In addition, flexible policies and practices remain key through these challenging times, especially those that address pandemic circumstances and impacts with equity-informed strategies. One key equity-informed strategy for TPR committees can be summed up as, “Do not let the 25% of faculty able to be more productive during the global pandemic set the standard for the 75% who are not able to do so” (University of Michigan Report). These foundational strategies can help create a climate that benefits all through promoting the value of their contributions, and therefore helps to retain high-quality faculty and staff.

Today’s feature was shared with us by the ADVANCE PI team. If you have an article you think we should feature, please email it to advance-mtu@mtu.edu and we will consider adding it to the ADVANCE Weekly Roundup.

The ADVANCE Weekly Roundup is brought to you by ADVANCE at Michigan Tech, an NSF-funded initiative dedicated to improving faculty career success, retention, diversity, equity and inclusion. Past articles are available on the ADVANCE Newsblog.

Reminders

Face Coverings Required Indoors on Campus

While Michigan Tech is at Health and Safety Level Two, face coverings must be worn indoors. This applies to all students, employees and visitors, regardless of vaccination status.

Michigan Tech strongly recommends that all employees and students continue with handwashing and hand-sanitizing practices, especially in light of the virulence of the COVID-19 delta variant. Please be aware that if you are exposed to COVID-19, quarantine guidelines vary depending on vaccination status.

In Level Two, students and employees are not required to monitor their symptoms daily prior to coming to campus. But, individuals should be mindful of their own symptoms. A useful monitoring tool is available from the CDC.

FacultyWatch Course Material Survey

This is a final reminder: Michigan Tech has been invited to participate in FacultyWatch, an important course material industry survey conducted by OnCampus Research (IndiCo) and published by the National Association of College Stores.

Michigan Tech is participating along with other higher-ed institutions across the nation. The survey is open until Sunday (Nov. 21).

Check your email for the survey link. One participant from our campus will win a $50 Visa gift card!

To better serve our campus community, we ask for your participation in a short survey about course materials. This is an opportunity to make our voices heard, maximize learning outcomes and be the driving force for making changes to course materials.

This industry-wide survey investigates faculty members' attitudes toward course materials, their value, preferred formats, the adoption process, open educational resources (OER) and the role of the campus store. Participation in the survey is voluntary and confidential.

Results will only be reported in the aggregate; results from individual stores will not be published. No survey participant will be contacted for promotional or sales purposes. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Judy Zei or Shane "Sully" Sullivan at the Campus Bookstore at 906-487-2410.
