PhD Defense: Kevin Nevorski, BioSci

Doctoral candidate Kevin Nevorski (BioSci) will present his Ph.D. defense Friday (Nov. 5) at 2 p.m. This virtual defense will be held online only. Attendance is invited via Zoom

Nevorski's defense is titled "Denitrification and nitrogen fixation commonly co-occur but rates vary throughout the year and in different environments."

From the abstract:
Denitrification and nitrogen fixation are nitrogen cycling processes which can occur simultaneously in streams but are rarely studied together. The overarching goal of this dissertation was to quantify temporal and spatial variation of these rates in streams across the USA, characterize the environmental drivers of that variation, and determine the role that denitrification plays in the carbon cycle. ... Overall, we found that denitrification and nitrogen fixation commonly cooccur, that rates are more variable spatially and temporally than expected, and that this variation is not simply explained by environmental characteristics as commonly assumed.

Interactive Workshop: Prototype Your Innovation

How do you communicate an innovative idea with stakeholders? The more you can demonstrate how your innovation works, the better your understanding of the solution and the more informative feedback will be.

Join us for an interactive workshop held in the Alley Makerspace (MUB basement) in which you will prototype your innovation and test it for "customer" feedback. Prototyping can range from simple to complex. We will focus on building a mockup of your idea so you can present it and gather feedback. This feedback will inform your next design iteration and help you to tailor your solution to your end-user’s needs.

Join us Nov. 11 from 5:30-7 p.m. Register to attend, and we will follow up with a Google Calendar invite.

ME-EM Graduate Seminar Speaker

The next ME-EM Graduate Seminar Speaker will present at 4 p.m. tomorrow (Nov. 4) via Zoom.

Reminders

Face Coverings Required Indoors on Campus

While Michigan Tech is at Health and Safety Level Two, face coverings must be worn indoors. This applies to all students, employees and visitors, regardless of vaccination status.

Michigan Tech strongly recommends that all employees and students continue with handwashing and hand-sanitizing practices, especially in light of the virulence of the COVID-19 delta variant. Please be aware that if you are exposed to COVID-19, quarantine guidelines vary depending on vaccination status.

In Level Two, students and employees are not required to monitor their symptoms daily prior to coming to campus. But, individuals should be mindful of their own symptoms. A useful monitoring tool is available from the CDC.

Brown Bag Research Seminar Series

The campus community is invited to hear Xin Li (COB), assistant professor of finance, present "Do Firms Set Pension Discount Rates Strategically?" as part of the College of Business Brown Bag Research Seminar Series, from noon to 1 p.m. today (Nov. 3), in the Academic Office Building, Room 101.

From the abstract:
Corporations reduce the magnitude of their pension contributions through their choice of pension liability discount rates, and do so asymmetrically; firms are slow to drop the rates when corporate bond rates drop, but raise them rapidly when rates rise. This effect varies across firms due to heterogeneity in firm investment productivity and financing and pension funding constraints that deter corporate investments. We find setting higher discount rates helps to improve investments of underfunded firms, particularly for financially constrained firms vulnerable to lower rates.

Interactive Discussion: 'Popping the Filter Bubble'

Individuals are bombarded daily by a mass of information curated just for them. Join librarians and other experts from Michigan Tech’s campus for an interactive discussion called "Popping the Filter Bubble" as part of the Bad Info Project today (Nov. 3) from 5-7 p.m. in the Van Pelt and Opie Library’s East Reading Room.

Discussion facilitators, including faculty, lecturers and staff from a range of departments on campus, will each present relevant research to help participants better understand the role of algorithms and information filtering, and strategies to work around them. They will then lead small-group discussions on each topic so participants can actively engage with and manage the flow of information around them.

Library events are open to all faculty, staff, students and community members.

This event is made possible in part by a grant from the Michigan Humanities, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and by funding from the Department of Humanities at Michigan Tech.
