MS Defense: Revanth Mattey, ME-EM

M.S. in Mechanical Engineering candidate Revanth Mattey (ME-EM) will present his master's defense Monday (July 19) at noon. This will be a virtual defense held online only. Virtual attendees are invited to join via Zoom

Mattey's defense is titled "Phase field Modeling of Chemically Strengthened glass Machine Learning for reaction diffusion systems."

Nordic Ski team announces incoming class

Michigan Tech Nordic ski coaches Tom and Kristen Monahan Smith announce the addition of seven men and four women to the roster for the 2021-22 season. The incoming class is represented by student-athletes from Minnesota, Utah, Oregon, Switzerland, France, Canada, Norway and Finland.

"One of our greatest past challenges has been not quite having the team depth to take away conference and regional titles," Tom Monahan Smith said. "This season's team will have the most competitive depth we have fielded potentially in the history of our program. We are simply fired up to get this outstanding team of women working together and racing together for team conference, regional and national championship titles."

The men's team will be represented by 12 men, including five returning student-athletes from the 2020-21 season and seven new recruits.

"This past spring we graduated a huge class from our men's team, including our three student-athletes that represented Michigan Tech at both the 2020 and 2021 NCAA Skiing Championships," added Monahan Smith. "These eight graduates delivered for our team through the past four years both athletically and academically. They raised the bar for our program driving us to an Elite 8 Championship Team, and the top academically performing men's Nordic team in all of NCAA! We owe thanks to the incredible 2021 graduating class for building our men's team into what it is today."

In Print

In his paper "An alternative to the Euler–-Maclaurin summation formula: approximating sums by integrals only" published in Numerische Mathematik volume 140, pages 755--790 (2018), Iosif Pinelis (Math) offered a summation formula, which is applicable whenever the famous Euler–-Maclaurin (EM) summation formula is applicable, and in such a case will usually outperform, or greatly outperform, the EM formula in terms of the execution time, memory use, and parallelization capabilities. The advantages of the alternative summation formula are the greater, the higher precision of the result is needed.

Now the Pinelis alternative to the EM summation formula has been implemented as the command SumPinelis in the popular open-license computer algebra system PARI/GP (https://pari.math.u-bordeaux.fr/), developed by Henri Cohen and maintained by Karim Belabas. In Section 4.3, titled "Pinelis alternative to the EM summation", of their book "Numerical Algorithms for Number Theory: Using Pari/GP", recently published by the American Mathematical Society, they confirm that "in these cases SumPinelis is an order of magnitude faster than the built-in Euler–-Maclaurin sumnum method, and also considerably faster than Sumdelta".

Reminders

Get Vaccinated, Continue Washing and Sanitizing Hands

While Michigan Tech is at Health and Safety Level One, face coverings and daily symptom monitoring are no longer required. However, those who wish to continue wearing a face covering are encouraged to do so.

The MTU Flex Task Force also encourages University community members to get their vaccinations and continue with handwashing and hand-sanitizing practices.

Internet Downtime on Sunday, July 18

On Sunday, July 18, starting at 10:00 p.m., Michigan Tech IT will transition internet traffic to a new campus firewall. This will cause an interruption in internet traffic to and from campus for approximately 15 minutes. This will also affect network traffic on campus and telephone service.

If you have any questions or concerns, we can help. Contact us at it-help@mtu.edu or call 7-1111.

Scientific Excursions Aboard the Agassiz on Sunday

Michigan Tech's research vessel, Agassiz, will be offering scientific excursions at the Lake Superior Day Festival in Copper Harbor from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday (July 18).

The Agassiz will depart every 45 minutes from the Isle Royale Queen dock beginning at 1 p.m. The 40-minute excursions will be led by chief scientist John Lenters (CEGE/GLRC), who will talk about the newly installed weather buoy in Copper Harbor.

Interested participants may register in advance online. If you have questions about registration, contact Lloyd Wescoat at lwescoat@mtu.edu.

Space is limited. All participants should wear closed-toe shoes. Participants must be at least 7 years old. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The Agassiz is funded by the GM Ride the Waves Program, which puts 600 Copper Country youth and adults on the water each year to learn about the health of the Great Lakes and Lake Superior, and to promote Great Lakes stewardship.

Lake Superior Day is celebrated throughout the Lake Superior basin on or close to the third Sunday in July in many communities around Lake Superior. The event highlights the special connections people have to this unique world treasure.

Lots of other special activities will be taking place Sunday during the eighth annual Lake Superior Day Festival in Copper Harbor. The festival is planned from 1-4 p.m. at the Sixth Street Dock along the Copper Harbor Boardwalk, near the Isle Royale Queen boat dock.

Members of the public are invited to:

  • Take a walk along the boardwalk to learn about Lake Superior’s geoheritage with Erika Vye (GLRC).
  • Learn about fishing with Michigan Sea Grant Extension educator Lauren Jescovitch.
  • Enjoy fish stew (kalamojakka), rieska (Finnish flatbread), cake and other treats at a community picnic ($5 donation suggested).
  • Watch a log rolling demonstration.
  • Create interactive art: Paint the model freighter and decorate the street with chalk drawings.

In the News

Michigan Tech’s contributions to the eighth annual Lake Superior Day Festival, taking place Sunday, July 18 in Copper Harbor, were highlighted in a Daily Mining Gazette article. Lloyd Wescoat (GLRC) was interviewed.
