Nominations Open for 2026 CGS/ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award

Nominations are now open for the 2026 Council of Graduate Schools (CGS)/ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award. Please submit nominations to the Graduate School no later than 4 p.m. on May 28 following our online instructions.

This year, nominations are being accepted from dissertations in the fields of:

  1. Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Engineering
  2. Social Sciences (Note: History is classed within the humanities and is not a field of competition in 2026.)

Michigan Tech may nominate one student in each field. Ph.D. students who have completed all of their degree requirements between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2026, are eligible. The fields of competition for 2027 will be Biological/Life Sciences and Humanities and Fine Arts (including History).

A nomination packet must be submitted by the department chair or college dean to our CGS/ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Nomination form no later than 4 p.m. on May 28.

Smithsonian Magazine quoted Rolf Peterson and Sarah Hoy (both CFRES) in a story about the latest Isle Royale Winter Study, which found the island’s wolf population has reached its highest level in nearly 50 years while the moose population continues to decline.

NextGenDefense quoted Amy Marcarelli (BioSci/ESC) and Michael Sayers (MTRI) in a story about Michigan Tech’s DARPA-funded project to develop a microbial fuel cell that generates electricity from ocean organic matter to power long-endurance underwater sensors.

Brad Wells (CEO) was quoted by the Daily Mining Gazette in a story about Michigan Tech’s Summer Youth Programs, which begin next month and are expected to bring more than a thousand students from around the world to campus for hands-on STEM learning experiences.

The Daily Mining Gazette mentioned Michigan Tech alum Emily Geiger ’11 ’15 (B.S. Ph.D. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) in a story about her appointment as superintendent and middle/high school principal for Lake Linden-Hubbell Schools following her interim role with the district.
