In the Skies, Streets and Stories: MTU Enterprise Program Continues to Expand After 26 Years

Large group of people attending an academic poster presentation in a spacious, sunlit hall with floor-to-ceiling windows.

Last spring, Michigan Tech’s Enterprise Program celebrated 25 years of excellence and innovation alongside Design Expo, the annual showcase event for both Enterprise and Senior Design teams. Continuing forward as a hallmark of the Michigan Tech experience, Enterprise added three new teams during the 2025-26 academic year: Aeronautics and Rocketry, Urban Intelligence Lab, and Ink & Ore.

Nagesh Hatti, Enterprise Program director, sees the continued growth as a natural progression as Enterprise continues to respond to both the industry demands and the educational resources students have come to expect.

“The emergence of Enterprise teams in areas like aeronautics, urban intelligence, and the humanities highlights the breadth of experiential learning we offer,” said Hatti. “Whether students are working on rockets, designing systems that support human interaction in complex environments, or creating literary work, they gain real-world, interdisciplinary skills aligned with today’s industries.”

CyberHusky Team Wins State Presidential AI Challenge

Four Houghton High School students from Michigan Tech’s CyberHusky program are among Michigan’s state champions in the 2026 Presidential AI Challenge, a nationwide competition that engages students in applying artificial intelligence tools to help their local community and solve real-world problems.

The winning CyberHusky team demonstrated outstanding technical ability, creativity and teamwork in designing and implementing AI-driven solutions, said advisor Yu Cai, a professor in MTU’s Department of Applied Computing and associate dean of the College of Computing.

“The CyberHusky team’s achievement reflects both the students’ dedication and the strength of Houghton High School in STEM education,” said Cai. “Their success highlights the growing impact of K-12 AI education initiatives and the importance of preparing the next generation of technology leaders.”

Led by Michigan Tech professors and students, the CyberHusky program gives local students in grades 8-12 the opportunity to experience cybersecurity and machine learning concepts and put them into practice. Team members then test their prowess in competitive state and national events.
