New International Travel Policy and Procedures

Michigan Tech is pleased to announce that a formal University Policy regarding international travel and three supporting procedures have been established. These guidelines are intended to clarify the requirements for sponsored international travel, streamlining financial approvals, supporting employees with respect to increasing data security risks associated with international travel, and improving our ability to communicate in emergency situations with our community members abroad.

We ask that all members of our campus community who travel abroad review the following:

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What if I become aware of an international travel opportunity less than 45 days before it occurs?
A. In these circumstances, please submit your Concur Travel Request as soon as possible and note the reason that it is being submitted less than 45 days prior to travel (e.g., Received notification that the research site is available for this date range yesterday). The individuals working on your request will do their best to process it in the time available prior to your departure.

Q. Do I need to let the University know of personal travel?
A. No. However, if you intend to take a University device or data abroad, please follow Procedure 1.23.3 International Technology Use. If you are cleared personnel, please follow your usual reporting requirements for personal and University travel.

Q. Why can’t I take my regular laptop with me? It’s so much easier for me to use.
A. We have had University laptops stolen, hacked and otherwise tampered with while abroad. It is imperative that sensitive data — including student data, research and other confidential information — not be unnecessarily exposed to these types of threats. In addition, devices that travel abroad may not be safe to connect back into our system upon return. The use of a loaner laptop containing only necessary information is the best way to mitigate these concerns.

If you have additional questions about this policy or the accompanying procedures, please email policy@mtu.edu.

In Print

Mark Rhodes (SS) and Julianna Bartoszek ’25 (B.S. Anthropology) are the authors of an article recently published in GeoHumanities.

The article is titled "Eponyms, Heirlooms, Living Memory, and the Planty Memorialization of People."

This research follows on from Bartoszek's time in the Department of Social Sciences' Undergraduate Program for Exploration and Research in Social Sciences (UPERSS) program and her work with Rhodes to create a database of vegetable varietals that use eponyms, or names derived from other people’s names (i.e., the Beyonce potato).

Their findings highlight the complex and diverse processes of naming, which both follow and diverge from similar patterns of commemoration. As the scientific community moves away from eponyms in their naming conventions, they make a case for the humanities and social sciences and a more nuanced understanding of memory, commemoration and ecology within naming policy.

In the News

GlobeNewswire and 241 additional outlets nationwide mentioned Michigan Tech alum Deedra Irwin ’15 (B.S. Exercise Science) in a story about her pursuit of a return to the Winter Olympics. Irwin is training to compete in biathlon at the 2026 Milano-Cortina Games following her seventh-place finish in 2022 — the best ever by an American in the event.

Bring Smiles to Campus: Become a Pet Partners Handler

College life can be stressful for students, faculty and staff alike. One simple yet powerful way to improve well-being across our community is through the healing connection between humans and animals. Research shows that spending time with therapy animals can lower blood pressure, reduce anxiety and boost mood for both participants and handlers.

Do you have an exceptional, friendly animal (dog, cat, horse or bunny) who loves people and can brighten someone’s day with just a tail wag or a gentle nudge? You and your pet could make a real difference in the lives of Michigan Tech students and others in our community.

SuperiorLand Pet Partners, a community partner with the national pet therapy organization Pet Partners, will offer a Handler Class on Michigan Tech's campus on Nov. 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This six-hour fun and informative class is the first step to becoming a registered Pet Partners team.

This opportunity is offered in partnership with the Center for Student Mental Health and Well-being and the Van Pelt and Opie Library as part of ongoing efforts to promote mental health, connection and stress relief on campus.

Once certified, you and your animal can volunteer at:

  • MTU events
  • Local hospitals and schools
  • “Read to Me” literacy programs
  • Nursing homes and community visits

Supporting student mental health and connection has never been so rewarding for both you and your furry (or fluffy!) friend.

To learn more or sign up, contact Patty Cornish, R.N., MSN, a certified Pet Partners Handler Class instructor, at 906-485-5815.
