University and Distinguished Professor Nominations Sought

Nominations will be accepted for University and Distinguished Professors, which recognize the achievements of some of Michigan Tech’s most outstanding faculty members.

The University Professor title recognizes faculty members who have made outstanding scholarly contributions to the University and their discipline over a substantial period of time.

The Distinguished Professor title recognizes outstanding faculty members who have made substantial contributions to the University and their discipline but are not presently recognized through an endowed position or faculty fellowship.

Nominations for both positions must be submitted to your respective dean by Oct. 17. Nomination packets will be reviewed by the Deans Council and an advisory committee organized by President Rick Koubek. Eligibility and nomination requirements, as well as detailed information regarding these titles, can be found on the Academic Affairs Honors & Awards page.

Terri Jo Frew's Artwork Wins Best in Show

Jury voting at the group art show "That's Funny" hosted by the McLean County Arts Center in Bloomington, Illinois, has named "A Genie," a sculpture created by Associate Teaching Professor Terri Jo Frew (VPA), as Best in Show.

Frew's sculpture was chosen from among the artworks of more than 40 skilled artists.

Ph.D. students Peter Agyemang and Henry Lanquaye; research scientist Sushil K. Dwivedi; undergraduate students Christina You, Alicia Guo, and Ashlyn Colleen Beatty; and Assistant Professor Yan Zhang (BioSci) and Professors Athar Ata (Chem), Thomas Werner (BioSci), and Haiying Liu (Chem) are the authors of a research article recently published in ACS Applied Bio Materials.

The article is titled "Cyanine-Based Dual-Emission Sensor for Ratiometric NAD(P)H Imaging in Cells, Renal Tissues, and Entire Organisms."

The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support that made this research possible.

Funding for Zhang’s portion of the work was provided by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (Grant R15DK137195) and the PKD Foundation (Grant No. 1021264). Zhang also extends appreciation to the Kansas PKD Research and Translation Core Center at the University of Kansas Medical Center (U54D126126) and the Polycystic Kidney Disease Research Resource Consortium (PKD-RRC) for providing critical human kidney tissue samples from both healthy individuals and ADPKD patients.

Liu’s research efforts were supported by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) through grants R15GM114751, 2R15GM114751 and R15GM146206-01. Additional infrastructure support was made possible by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under Grant No. 2117318, which funded the acquisition of a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer, an essential tool for analyzing the chemical structures of the fluorescent sensors developed in this study. Liu served as a co-principal investigator on this NSF equipment grant.

The authors sincerely thank all the funding agencies whose generous support was instrumental in conducting this research and achieving its scientific objectives.

Michigan Tech student Raegan Dick (forestry and wildlife ecology) was quoted by the Lewiston Tribune, Moscow-Pullman Daily News and six regional outlets in stories about college students’ experiences maintaining wilderness trails with the Selway Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation. Dick shared reflections on her summer working in the backcountry and was honored as the Warren Miller Wilderness Skills Fellow.

SAE International mentioned Michigan Tech postdoctoral scholar Sid Gopujkar (APSRC) and Yashodeep Lonari ’11 (M.S. Mechanical Engineering) in a press release about COMVEC 2025. Gopujkar will moderate the Graduate Student Research Panel, where Lonari is among the presenters, and MTU will also be represented among the event’s exhibitors.

The Mining Journal reported on the passing of former Michigan Tech hockey player and coach Glen Weller. Weller was twice inducted into the Michigan Tech Sports Hall of Fame and also served as a Huskies assistant coach, radio broadcaster, and member of the Hockey Advisory Council. The announcement was made by Michigan Tech Athletics on Aug. 14.

Parking on Campus During Move-In Days

Today, Aug. 19, is the last Move-In Day for fall 2025, and we are asking for your help, patience and understanding as we welcome our new Huskies. Move-In Days are landmark days for our new students and their families. With this being an exciting and emotional time for many, we ask for your support as we guide them during this transition to their new Husky home.

Today's Move-In Day Schedule:

During Move-In, we will have controlled traffic patterns throughout campus to help our new students and their families move through the Check-In and Orientation process. To support our efforts, please park in the following lots:

Meet THERC Senior Research Scientist Bapi Pahar

The Health Research Institute is excited to welcome Bapi Pahar, who has joined Michigan Tech as a senior research scientist for the Translational Health Engineering Research Center (THERC) in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He will introduce himself and THERC to the Michigan Tech community at a meet and greet next Wednesday, Aug. 27, from 1-3 p.m. in MUB Ballroom B.

Come join Staff Council for our monthly meeting! Staff Council is a service organization within the University whose charge is: to assist the University in recognizing outstanding performance and ongoing dedicated service by staff membersto maximize the use of talents and resources of the staff to support educational programs and to develop and strengthen skills and professionalism among the staffto provide events and opportunities that enhance the working environment of Michigan TechEach meeting consists of a notable guest speaker to share updates from around campus, updates about upcoming Staff Council programs and events, and opportunities to chat amongst a community of fellow staff members. Membership on Staff Council is voluntary, open, and available to any eligible staff member.
