Prague, Czech Republic—Study Abroad

This program is offered through International Studies Abroad (ISA) at Charles University.

Prague rests along the banks of the Vltava River, and has been the political, cultural, and economic hotspot of Eastern Europe for over 1000 years. With over 1.2 million local inhabitants in the city proper, and a constant flow of international travelers exploring the city, Prague is a bustling capital of global importance. Since 1992, Prague has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and for good reason: The city is an unaltered, hands-on museum, full of famous theatres and opera houses performing Mozart's Don Giovanni, open parks with political protest history, and centuries-old buildings converted into late-night discothèques. The galling years of communist rule linger in the minds of Czechs, and striking up conversation on the subject brings out a history and culture lesson that could only be learned from the source itself

Czech and Roman King Charles IV founded Prague University on April 7, 1348 as the first university to the north of the Alps and to the east of Paris. The university grew rapidly and garnered respect throughout Europe for hundreds of years.

The 20th Century won over distinguished professors to teach there, like Albert Einstein and Thomas G. Masaryk. While it produced vast amounts of scientific research and literary work, World War II erupted and Hitler closed all Czech universities, persecuting professors and students, while the German side of the universities meagerly prevailed. At War's end, Communist control continued and Charles University, having changed its name, grew modestly. It wasn't until 1989 that the totalitarian regime ended and Charles University was able to flourish.

ISA students will enjoy small class sizes with fellow ISA classmates. Classes are taught by Charles University professors in a classroom location on Thakurova street in Prague 6. This is a nice area of town where many local students reside and attend classes at several Charles University faculties located in the area. There are nice restaurants and some shops in the area as well as a major metro and tram station with a fast connection to the city center.
