MTU Student Organization Hosts Regional Civil Engineering Symposium, Secures Place in National Competition

Students carry a concrete canoe from the snowy banks of the Keweenaw Waterway with the Portage Lift Bridge in the background.

From April 10-12, Houghton became a city of civil engineers, as 16 competing universities and more than 450 student competitors arrived at Michigan Tech to participate in the Eastern Great Lakes ASCE Student Symposium. The event was hosted by Michigan Tech’s student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

In addition to their responsibilities as hosts, Tech's student teams walked away with wins in three competitions, two qualifications for nationals, a Spirit of the Competition Award, and a wealth of experience.

“Hosting the 2025 ASCE Eastern Great Lakes Student Symposium has been the most rewarding challenge I've faced during my time at Michigan Tech,” said Brendan Tanner, civil engineering student and MTU ASCE chapter president. “This has been an incredibly gratifying experience that I will carry with pride for the rest of my life.”

Full instructions on the application and evaluation process are found online. Students are eligible if all of the following criteria are met:

  1. Must be a Ph.D. student.
  2. Must expect to finish during the semester supported as a Finishing Fellow.
  3. Must have submitted no more than one previous application for a Finishing Fellowship.
  4. Must be eligible for candidacy (tuition charged at Research Mode rate) at the time of application.

They are intended to recognize outstanding Ph.D. candidates who are in need of financial support to finish their degrees and are also contributing to the attainment of goals outlined in the Michigan Tech Strategic Plan.

The Graduate School anticipates funding up to 10 fellowships with support ranging from $2,000 to full support (stipend plus tuition). Students who receive full support through a Finishing Fellowship may not accept any other employment. For example, students cannot be fully supported by a Finishing Fellowship and accept support as a GTA or GRA.

Reminders

A Cup of Joe with the Safety Crew

Michigan Tech’s Safety Team — Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and the Office of Risk, Insurance, Safety, Security, and Compliance (RISSC) — will be hosting our next monthly Safety Round Table: a place for all Huskies to share a cup of coffee and learn about the importance of campus health and safety.

We invite you to join us today, May 7, from 9-10 a.m. in the MUB Alumni Lounge.

Topic: The EHS team will discuss the new upcoming regulations on using products containing methylene chloride (also known as dichloromethane and abbreviated as DCM).

In addition to numerous laboratory uses, methylene chloride was historically used in a variety of cleaners, degreasers, adhesives and other solvent-based products. At this presentation, we will outline what products need to be methylene chloride-free, the regulations for continued laboratory use, and the implementation deadlines for the new rules. There will also be an informal opportunity to talk with our campus safety professionals about other safety related questions and issues.

If you have a topic you want discussed, please email ehs-help@mtu.edu. We would be happy to present on a safety topic you are interested in!

So mark your calendars! Come ask the questions you have always wanted to ask and get the answers you need about Michigan Tech safety programs, legal compliance issues and additional resources…and have a cup of Joe with the Safety Crew!
