Husky FAN In Need of Pantry Donations

Help the Husky Food Access Network (FAN) make sure no Husky is hungry this holiday season. Studies have shown that as many as half of college students in the U.S. experience food insecurity. The pantry has distributed over 1,820 pounds of food since the start of the semester, and there's no sign of slowing down!

Keep the Michigan Tech community fed by donating any nonperishable food items or toiletries. Donations can be made at any time by leaving items outside the pantry (in the Fisher Hall alcove across from Fisher 135).

The pantry is particularly in need of:

  • Soup and canned pasta (Chef Boyardee or similar)
  • Canned meat and fish
  • Canned beans
  • Canned fruits and vegetables
  • Snack foods
  • Cereal and oatmeal
  • Uncooked pasta and rice

Women's Basketball Goes 1-1 on Minnesota Road Trip

Michigan Tech women's basketball returned from a nonconference Minnesota road trip with a loss and a win.

Tech was outmaneuvered by Southwest Minnesota State 81-69 at Recreation/Athletic Facility on Thursday (Nov. 17). Isabella Lenz posted 17 points and Alex Rondorf notched her second straight double-double in the Huskies' first loss of the season.

"We put up a good fight," said head coach Sam Clayton. "We just gave up too many offensive boards and committed too many turnovers, both of which led to more possessions for a really good offensive team."

Saturday (Nov. 19), Michigan Tech used a 14-0 third quarter run to pull away from Minnesota-Crookston 82-62 at Lysaker Gymnasium. The Huskies improved to 4-1 in nonconference play.

"Today was a great bounce-back win," said Clayton. "Everyone contributed and came in ready to execute. Kate (Meister) had a great game and was very efficient with her minutes."

Meister led the Huskies with 15 points (6-10), six rebounds and one steal. Ellie Mackay shot 50% and totaled 13 points. Rondorf grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds and four steals while adding eight points.

Men's Basketball Defeats Golden Eagles

Michigan Tech men's basketball posted a 76-72 nonconference win over Minnesota-Crookston on Friday (Nov. 18) at SDC Gymnasium.

Pete Calcaterra posted a career-high 16 points off the bench. Adam Hobson led the offense with 19 points and Josh Terrian narrowly missed a double-double with 10 rebounds and eight points for the Huskies.

"My strength is just running the floor and giving us that spark off the bench, getting those tough rebounds and hustle plays," said Calcaterra. "I knew today we were going to need an inside presence, so I just did that as best I could."

Tech improved to 2-1 in nonconference play.

Hockey Sweeps St. Thomas with Clutch Third Periods

Michigan Tech hockey swept a CCHA road series against St. Thomas, pulling ahead in the third period of both games to clinch the wins.

The Huskies broke a 2-2 second-intermission tie with four goals in the third period to defeat St. Thomas 6-2 on Friday (Nov. 18) at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.

"We got contributions from all of our lines tonight," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "The goaltending kept us in it when it was going tough in the second period, and we got some timely scoring in the third and capitalized on the power play. I'm proud of the way we executed in the third period."

The Huskies completed the sweep Saturday (Nov. 19) when Ryland Mosley scored a shorthanded game-winning goal with 2:08 left in regulation. The Huskies won 4-3 and never trailed on the weekend to improve to 8-3-2 overall and 4-2-2 in the CCHA.

"What a great play by Parker (Saretsky) and Ryland," Shawhan said. "That was a huge win for us with four really tough games coming up against the two top teams in our league."

Cross Country Places Fourth, Eighth at Regionals

The Michigan Tech cross country squads impressed at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regionals meet Saturday (Nov. 19). The No. 18 men of Michigan Tech placed fourth overall, while the women placed eighth at the Wayne. E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course.

"Our men's team goal was a top-three finish and we were so close to hitting it, just three points off," head coach Kristina Owen said. "It really goes to show how every place for every runner matters."

Three All-Region Huskies led the men's team: Drew Kolodge (eighth, 31:01.05), Clayton Sayen (11th, 31:26.97) and Sam Lange (15th, 31:35.10). Behind them were Tucker Ringhand (34th, 32:10), Nick McKenzie (53rd, 32:29.07), Stephen Laparo (65th, 32:47.28) and Kyle Samluk (84th, 33:10.71).

"I was quite pleased with how the men raced," assistant head coach Robert Young said. "We knew it was going to be tight between us, Walsh and Saginaw Valley State, and it's a bummer that we were the higher number. But, we're anticipating we'll get to run again in two weeks."

The women's team placed eighth overall, improving five spots from last season's 13th-place finish.

"Our women have come so far this season and we're incredibly proud," Owen added. "They gave it everything they had out there and we can't ask for anything better than their best."

Michelle Bollini (27th, 22:23.25) and Sam Kurkowski (35th, 22:38.5) led the Huskies. Following them were Hannah Loughlin (41st) and Jesse Jacobusse (54th, 23:00.3), with Elsa Huckels (57th, 23:02.5) close behind, and then Anabel Needham (71st, 23:16.4) and Ingrid Seagren (99th, 23:40.7).

"They ran so well," Young added. "It's hard to feel disappointed when they ran so well. It stings a little bit because they had big goals and it seems unlikely that they'll make the national championships with that performance, but when you run your best and you get beat you tip your cap to who beat you and you come back better next year."

The NCAA Division II Championship races will be held Dec. 2 at Chambers Bay in University Place, Washington.
