3MT Registration Closes Today!

To present in this year's 3MT (Three Minute Thesis) competition, please fill out and submit the 3MT 2022 Registration form. The deadline to register is today (Oct. 6).

Michigan Tech's 2022 3MT competition will be held Oct. 13 at the MUB Ballroom. For more information on the competition, please see the 3MT page on the Graduate Student Government (GSG) website.

Participating in the  can be a way for graduate students to develop important communication and research skills, and to participate in the building of research culture at Michigan Tech. Cash prizes are also available to the top competitors and the people's choice.

In addition, the winners of the local 3MT competition are given a chance to represent Michigan Tech at the next level of competition, and potentially even national and international 3MT competitions, which provides an excellent networking and professional development opportunity.

SRC-Squared Panel Discussion on Circular Economy

You are invited to the second meeting of the Sustainable and Resilient Communities Social Network and Research Collaborative (SRC-Squared) for the 2022-23 academic year!

SRC-Squared is hosted by the Tech Forward Initiative for Sustainability and Resilience, and the goal is to build community around research collaborations centered on sustainability and resilience. SRC-Squared meets monthly throughout the academic year.

This meeting of SRC-Squared is focused on circular economy research. A panel of researchers will each share a specific research project focused on some aspect of circular economy research, and a discussion will follow, focusing on opportunities for collaboration and how our work could be expanded in this area.

The panel members for this meeting are Erin Syth (VPR), Rebecca Ong (ChE), David Shonnard (ChE), Shan Zhou (SS) and Tim Eisele (ChE).

Homecoming on Horizon for Football

Michigan Tech football meets Wayne State University for Homecoming 2022 on Saturday (Oct. 8) at 1 p.m., as the Huskies celebrate their 100th season of football.

Last season in Detroit, the Huskies slipped by the Warriors on a game-winning field goal 30-27. Now, both teams seek to right the ship after opening GLIAC play with a loss last week. 

Festivities for the 100th season celebration commence today (Oct. 6) with a welcome reception, and include a golf outing, tour of Kearly Stadium, golf scramble, dinner with the football team and customary pregame tailgate party at the Ajax Paving Industries Champions Pavilion for registered alumni.

Saturday, radio pregame on Mix 93.5 FM and pasty.net begins at noon with Josh Ylitalo and various special alumni guests. The game will be streamed on FloSports

Soccer Hosting Lakers, Panthers to Begin Four-Game Homestand

The Michigan Tech soccer team starts a four-game homestand this weekend.

The Huskies will host No. 6 Grand Valley State tomorrow (Oct. 7) at 7 p.m. and Davenport at noon on Sunday (Oct. 9).

Friday's contest will serve as community night, with an invitation for the local soccer clubs (both Copper Country Soccer Association and Houghton FC) to attend.

Fans can catch both games on FloSports, as part of the four-year media partnership with the GLIAC beginning this fall.

Sign Up to be a Huskies #MIKidsCan Player of the Game

Michigan Tech Athletics and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan have teamed up to promote the #MIKidsCan Campaign. Local Copper Country youth will have an opportunity to be a part of the pregame ceremony for football, hockey and basketball.

Lucky participants for hockey and basketball will be announced with the Michigan Tech starting lineup. Football participants will take part in the coin toss and bring the game ball to the officials.

Fill out the 2022-23 #MIKidsCan Player of the Game registration form to enter your student for a chance to become a Huskies #MIKidsCan Player of the Game. Students must be in kindergarten through eighth grade. Participants will be randomly selected.

New Funding

Petra Huentemeyer (Physics/EPSSI) is the principal investigator (PI) on a project that has received a $590,584 research and development grant from the National Science Foundation.

The project is titled "WoU-MMA: Understanding the Strongest Accelerators in our Galaxy by Combining Data from the HAWC Observatory and Other Instruments."

This is a potential three-year project.

Michael Sayers (MTRI) is the PI on a project that has received a $190,000 research and development co-op joint agreement from the University of Michigan - Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR).

The project is titled "Leveraging New Satellite Assets to Improve Satellite and Modeling Tools for Monitoring and Prediction of Nearshore Water Quality in the Great Lakes."

This is a potential one-year project.

Julia Burton (CFRES/ESC) is the PI on a project that has received a $10,000 research and development co-op/joint agreement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Forest Service Northern Research Station.

The project is titled "Forest management strategies in a changing world."

A bar of soap created by Anne Beffel (VPA) was at the heart of a Relationships & Family editorial published by Shondaland.com written in honor of Yom Kippur, the annual holy day of atonement in Judaism.

Beffel gave away more than 5,000 of the soaps, which featured the words “I’m sorry,” as part of the 9/11 recovery effort.

ICC Distinguished Lecture

As part of its Distinguished Lecturer Series, the Institute of Computing and Cybersystems (ICC) will present a virtual talk by Zahra Motamed, McMaster University, at 3 p.m. tomorrow (Oct. 7).

Motamed’s interests are in the areas of translational and basic cardiovascular mechanics. In her interdisciplinary research, she collaborates extensively with engineers, clinical scientists, surgeons and cardiologists in Canada, the United States and Europe.

Faculty, staff, graduate students and Michigan Tech retirees are invited to join the Graduate School and Van Pelt and Opie Library in the Opie Reading Room from 4-6 p.m. tomorrow (Oct. 7). Complimentary drinks and snacks will be served.

The social will highlight the services available for graduate students through the Graduate School and the Library. In addition, other departments from across campus who provide student support and services will be in attendance to share information.

Dining Services presents this week's C3 Luncheon being held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Alumni Lounge (MUB 107). All faculty and staff, along with their guests, are invited.

The C3 lunch buffet menus are created and prepared by executive chef Michael Landini and his culinary team. As the name suggests, the meals are meant to foster conversation, community and collegiality. Attendees may bring their lunch instead of purchasing the buffet. Fruit-infused water, coffee, tea, cookies and fruit are available free to all attendees.

The buffet lunch is $12 per person. Cash, credit cards and gift cards are accepted. Gift cards can be purchased in the Memorial Union office (MUB 101). You can submit C3 feedback using our Google form. To join the C3 Google group and receive weekly menus, email business-support@mtu.edu.
