Humans of Michigan Tech: Jonathan Willis

“Flying is the most independent and freeing experience there is. I learned this during my first solo flight while working toward my pilot’s certificate. I had about 10 hours of instruction in a plane when my instructor unexpectedly got out, telling me I was ready to solo. Knowing that you have the responsibility to operate an airplane safely by yourself is a unique and awesome feeling.”

Meet Jonathan Willis, a high-flying Husky who serves his country in the Civil Air Patrol squadron at Michigan’s northernmost airport — and find out where he’d go if he could fly anywhere — on the Humans of Michigan Tech blog.

Staff Hiring Process Webpages Revised

You are invited to take a look at the newly revised webpages for the staff hiring process. Many improvements were made, such as providing additional clarity in the hiring steps with an increased emphasis on search committee preparatory steps. In addition, compliance requirements were updated and tools for conducting unbiased searches were added. We hope these revisions will assist in recruiting and hiring exceptional staff members.

CTL Technical Workshops Offered

The Jackson Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is offering several technical workshops to help instructors prepare for their fall courses. Please register using the links below.

  • Getting Started with iClicker Cloud
iClicker Cloud helps instructors engage with their students in the classroom by asking polling questions that can promote discussion, identify areas of confusion and generate questions. Michigan Tech now has a campus site license for iClicker Cloud, so instructors can use this tool at no additional cost to their students. In this CTL technical workshop, we’ll review how to get started using iClicker Cloud in your classroom. We’ll review how to set up your instructor account, make custom course settings to meet your needs and integrate the course with your Canvas course.
  • Canvas Course Accessibility Checklist: Ensuring Access for All
In this CTL technical workshop, we’ll review some of the most common accessibility errors with Canvas course instructional materials. Learn how to use the Ally accessibility tool (available in all Canvas courses) to locate and remediate these errors and how to run a coursewide accessibility report to help you prioritize your efforts to improve your course materials and make them more accessible to all your students.

Men’s Basketball Takes Trip to Greece

Michigan Tech men's basketball is headed to Greece. The trip to the Mediterranean country affords the Huskies three exhibition games against Greek opponents, including Greek Select (Panathinaikos U-20) on Thursday (Aug. 18), Maroussi BC on Monday (Aug. 22) and Melissia BC on Tuesday (Aug. 23).

While in Greece, the Huskies plan to take in several cultural sites, including the Acropolis in Athens and the city of Santorini, where they will stay at Santorini Palace. Also on their itinerary is a private boat tour of Saronic Gulf and a guided tour of the city of Athens.

The Huskies will return to Houghton next Wednesday (Aug. 24).

New Funding

Bo Chen (ME-EM/APSRC) is the principal investigator on a project that has received a $82,800 research and development contract from the UT-Battelle Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

The project is titled "Integrated Control of Vehicle Speeds and Traffic Signals for Reducing Congestion and Energy Use Project Support."

In the News

Guy Meadows (GLRC) was quoted by Urban Milwaukee and Coastal News Today in stories on how Concordia University’s $12 million seawall and fortifications — one of the largest seawall structures on Wisconsin’s Lake Michigan shoreline — has affected its neighbors.

The stories were picked up from Wisconsin Watch.

The Construction Specifier ran a story on a pilot paving project Michigan Tech is working on with the city of Muskegon.

The project will be the first in Michigan to pave a portion of road with a mix of recycled tire rubber and concrete. The mixture will incorporate more than 10,000 scrap tires, and will be used to repave part of Sherman Boulevard.

WLUC TV6 mentioned Michigan Tech in a report on unexpected findings that will slow the completion of the US-41 road project in Houghton.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, last week construction crews encountered more rocks than expected and also uncovered a mine shaft vent, which needs to be sealed.

The complications mean that the College Avenue detours will remain in place longer than planned, though MDOT had hoped to return to the normal traffic pattern before MTU students returned for fall.

Bill Roberts was quoted in a Daily Mining Gazette story on Michigan Tech’s upcoming dedication of the Nara Family Maple Center, located at the Nara Family Forest in Torch Lake Township.

The center will be a site for K-12 outreach and education, teaching students about the history, heritage and products of sugar maple trees.

The Keweenaw Report also reported on the event, which will be held tomorrow (Aug. 18).
