PhD Defense: Benedict Egboiyi, ME-EM

Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics candidate Benedict Egboiyi will present their doctoral defense at 9 a.m. today (Aug. 12). Attendance is invited in person in MEEM 208 and virtually via Zoom.

Egboiyi's defense is titled "Fracture Mechanics of Chemically Strengthened Glass: Experiment and Modelling."

Egboiyi is advised by Trisha Sain.

PhD Defense: Mitchel Timm, ME-EM

Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics candidate Mitchel Timm will present their doctoral defense at 9 a.m. Monday (Aug. 15). This will be a virtual only defense. Attendance is invited via Zoom.

Timm's defense is titled "The Design and Analysis of Marangoni-Driven Robotic Surfers."

Timm is advised by Hassan Masoud.

New Funding

Aneet Narendranath (ME-EM/MuSTI) is the principal investigator (PI) on a project that has received a $83,712 research and development grant from the National Science Foundation.

The project is titled "Collaborative Research: ISS: Revealing interfacial stability, thermal transport and transient effects in film evaporation in microgravity."

Jeffrey Allen (ME-EM/MuSTI) is a co-PI on this potential four-year project.

Richelle Winkler (SS/ESC) is the PI on a project that has received a $100,000 research and development co-op/joint agreement from the United States Forest Service.

The project is titled "Social Vulnerability to Wildfire and Adaptive Capacity."

The story called out Tech’s involvement in a 2019 road paving project in Dickinson County that paved 3,300 feet of road and incorporated pieces of more than 3,600 recycled rubber tires.

Ph.D. in Forest Science candidate Ryne Rutherford was interviewed by MLive about his discovery of an eastern prickly pear cactus growing in the Upper Peninsula.

Rutherford found the cactus in bloom at the high elevations of the Huron Mountains.

New York Weekly reported that Dr. Tsitsi Hungwe ’12 (biochemistry and molecular biology), dentist and founder of the empowerment organization Higher Mountaintops, has been selected as a Leadership Experience Tour participant.

In January, Hungwe delivered the keynote address for Michigan Tech’s 33rd annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.

Reminder

Summer Hours End Sunday

Summer hours will end on Sunday (Aug. 14). Beginning Monday (Aug. 15), the University will return to regular office hours.

Regular hours of operation are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. All offices must be staffed during these hours.
