June Is PTSD Awareness Month

The month of June each year is designated as Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Month to bring awareness to those with PTSD and to encourage people to reach out to their fellow citizens to provide support and remove the stigma associated with this disorder.

PTSD is a mental health problem that some people develop after experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening event, like combat, a natural disaster, a car accident or sexual assault. It's normal to have upsetting memories, feel on edge or have trouble sleeping after this type of event. If symptoms last more than a few months, it may be PTSD.

Visit the National Center for PTSD to learn more about PTSD and to help raise PTSD awareness during the month of June. This site offers daily activities such as taking a pledge to raise PTSD awareness, learning about treatment options and sharing social media posts, all in an effort to support PTSD awareness.

Clayton Sayen Places 11th at NCAA Championships

Clayton Sayen, the most prolific Michigan Tech 1,500-meter runner in school history, crossed the finish line in 11th place with a time of 3:51.64 Saturday (May 28) at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Grand Valley State Track and Field Stadium.

Sayen started on the outside and used his customary closing speed to vie for top-five position heading into the final lap. He was involved in a three-runner collision, effectively taking him out of national title contention. He recovered to place 11th in the 12-athlete field.

"Clayton ran a great race and it's hard to see him run that well and then get unlucky, but that's racing," said head coach Kristina Owen. "He got himself in position to do something special, but there are certainly no guarantees in sport or in life. It's one of the risks of a tactical race, where the field gets tightly packed and there is more contact. He was frustrated immediately after the finish, but he's so professional and already putting it into greater context. This experience will serve him well next year, where he is going to come back even stronger and faster."
