Clayton Sayen Leads Track and Field at GLIAC Championships

Michigan Tech closed competition in the GLIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday (May 6) with better than expected results at GVSU Track and Field Stadium.

Highlights for the Huskies included another record-breaking performance in the men's 1,500 meters by Clayton Sayen and a new MTU school record set by Sam Kurkowski in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Sayen's time (3:47.57) earned him first place and set a new GLIAC record. It  was also a new MTU school record — the third set by Sayen this spring — and further improved his NCAA provisional mark. Kurkowski assembled her best race of the season, running tight with the lead pack to nab fourth place and set a new school record.

Overall, the Husky men scored 59 points this year for sixth place, up from 39 in 2020-21, while the women improved their standing from ninth to seventh, up from 18.5 points last season to 25 this spring.
