Required for All Employees: Sexual Misconduct Training Now Assigned

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and the time of year to complete your required annual employee training related to Title IX and sexual misconduct.

Monday (April 11), the training was sent out in an email with the subject “Michigan Technological University has assigned you training.” This email contains a link to access the training within Everfi, our training platform. Employees will be given ample time (60 days) to complete the training, which takes about one hour. Topics include responsibilities of Title IX personnel, bystander intervention strategies, appropriate responses to dating and domestic violence, confidentiality, supporting survivors, confidential resources, and referring survivors to our Title IX office.

This harassment and discrimination training joins safety training and IT security training as required campuswide training for all employees.

Be on the lookout for additional programming during April! For more information on Title IX, visit our website.

Humans of Michigan Tech: Jennifer Lynn Jermalowicz-Jones '98

"I knew I wanted to be a limnologist since the age of four when I bought my first microscope and got grounded for having a pet turtle in the bathtub. Every day after school I would ride my bike down to a few lakes and spend hours observing and studying them. In high school I completed a thesis my senior year on the effects of hydrogen peroxide on lake eutrophication.

I founded Restorative Lake Sciences (RLS) in 2012 in response to a significant need for a lake management and restoration consulting firm that provides objective analysis of lake issues with professional scientific recommendations to restore balance to aquatic ecosystems. The overall goal is to reduce scientific bias through intensive scientific evaluations and management recommendations that are not connected to profits or political agendas."

BioMed Graduate Seminar

Assistant Professor Muhammad Rizwan (BioMed) will present a Biomedical Engineering Graduate Seminar at 3:30 p.m. Friday (April 15) in M&M U115.

Rizwan's seminar is titled "Engineered hydrogels for the differentiation and organoids growth of liver cells."

From the abstract:
Diseases specific to liver bile duct cells (cholangiocytes) account for 70% of pediatric and up to a third of adult liver transplantations. Cholangiocyte can be used to model liver biliary diseases and for transplantation. Notch signaling and a favorable extracellular microenvironment is critical to differentiate human stem cells to cholangiocytes and for primary cholangiocyte organoid growth. This talk describes the development of engineered Notch activating hyaluronan (HA) hydrogels to specifically differentiate human embryonic stem cell-derived hepatoblasts to cholangiocytes and photo-chemical control of Notch signaling.

ME-EM Graduate Seminar Speaker

The next speaker in the Department of Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics (ME-EM) Graduate Seminar Series will present at 4 p.m. tomorrow (April 14) in MEEM 112.
