MTU Hosting Health Professions Mock Interview Day

Michigan Tech Pre-Health Professions is excited to host its annual Health Professions Mock Interview Day on Tuesday (April 12).

Students will have the opportunity to practice and gain experience with common graduate health program interview formats, including traditional interviews and multiple mini interviews. We have recruited volunteers to help out with this event, including current medical/professional students, local providers, and University faculty and staff. The goal is to help better prepare students for these types of interviews with practice and valuable feedback.

Interested students can contact the Director of Pre-Health Professions Nicole Seigneurie at nmseigne@mtu.edu.

PhD Defense: Shijia Yan, Math

Ph.D. in Mathematical Sciences candidate Shijia Yan will defend his doctoral dissertation at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow (April 7). This event is virtual only via Zoom

Yan's dissertation is titled "Statistical Methods for Controlling Population Stratification and Gene-Based Association Studies."

He is advised by Shuanglin Zhang.

MS Defense: Austin Johnson, BioSci

M.S. in Biological Sciences candidate Austin Johnson will present their master's defense from 2-3 p.m. tomorrow (April 7) in person in GLRC 202 and virtually via Zoom.

Johnson's defense is titled "Anthropogenic Influences on the Decline of Lake Superior's Coaster Brook Trout."

From the abstract:
The coaster brook trout is a life history variant of the brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) that is characterized by either lake residency or migration between stream and lake habitats. Coaster brook trout were once widespread throughout Lake Superior and its tributaries, but populations declined sharply in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Historically, brook trout were a popular target of recreational and subsistence fishing in the Lake Superior basin, and it has been hypothesized that angling pressure combined with multiple forms of industrial development are what drove the coaster brook trout’s decline.

ME-EM Graduate Seminar Speaker

The next Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics (ME-EM) Graduate Seminar Speaker will present virtually at 4 p.m. tomorrow (April 7).

Rita Raman will present “Neuromuscular Actuators for Medicine and Machines.”

Raman is the d’Arbeloff Career Development Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at MIT. Her lab is centered on engineering adaptive living materials for applications in medicine and machines.

Join the seminar via Zoom.

Info Session: Los Alamos National Lab Career Opportunities (with Pizza!)

Interested in learning about career opportunities at Los Alamos National Laboratory? MTU alumnus Ian Cummings ’16 ’17 ‘20 will be presenting an introduction to the laboratory’s mission and highlighting the breadth of career opportunities available at all levels.

The informational session will be held from 5-6 p.m. today (April 6) in Rekhi 101. Pizza will be provided!

Cummings will also highlight the Los Alamos Dynamics Summer School program, which is a great opportunity for upper-level undergraduate students and first-year graduate students to gain research experience while working closely with fellow students and mentors on a research topic.

Over the course of the 10-week program, the student teams develop an approach to solving an interesting research problem using simulations, experiments and data analysis. The teams have the opportunity to write and present a conference paper at the International Modal Analysis Conference the following February.

The program also includes tours of lab facilities, internal and external speakers, and tutorials on a number of relevant topics (e.g., signal processing, machine learning, modeling).

Webinar: Strategies for Antiracist Action in STEM

Bala Chaudhary is an assistant professor of environmental studies at Dartmouth College. She was awarded a National Science Foundation CAREER Award to study microbial dispersal and ways to promote racial equity in the environmental sciences.

Labs are our scientific homes — the frontlines of where inclusion and belonging are fostered, or where exclusion, marginalization and discrimination occur. As scientists are increasingly acknowledging the lack of racial and ethnic diversity in science, there is a need for clear direction on how to take antiracist action.

In this Strategies for Antiracist Action in STEM webinar, Chaudhary will present guidelines for developing antiracist policies and action along with discussion in an effort to promote racial and ethnic diversity, equity and inclusion.

Join us from noon to 1 p.m. tomorrow (April 6) for this webinar presentation and Q&A. Please RSVP if you plan to attend.

Thought-Provoking Dinner Theatre at the Rozsa

This week, the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts will be presenting a thought-provoking dinner theatre production of Larissa FastHorse's "The Thanksgiving Play." Join in for an evening of food, satire and conversation.

About the Show:
How hard can it be to celebrate Thanksgiving and Native American Heritage Month at the same time? Good intentions collide with absurd assumptions in FastHorse’s wickedly funny satire, as a troupe of teaching artists scrambles to create a show that somehow manages to celebrate both while avoiding any cultural missteps.

Schedule:

Thursday, April 7 | Friday, April 8 | Saturday, April 9

For every performance, dinner is served at 6:45 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. View the menu.

Following the show, we will have a panel discussion focused on the diversity and inclusion topics demonstrated in the play.

Tickets:
Tickets are reserved by table. To ensure that we have your dinner ready for you, tickets must be purchased in advance. Prices include your dinner, ticket to the performance, and after-show discussion.

Full Table (four tickets): $120
Half Table (two tickets): $60 for the general public / $20 for students with the Experience Tech Fee.
