VITA Returns to Michigan Tech College of Business

The College of Business is pleased to announce the return of Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). Accounting majors provide free income tax preparation assistance for students and members of the community who could not otherwise afford the services of a CPA tax professional. This service has been offered at Michigan Tech for over 20 years.

Assistance is being provided this year only by appointment via Google Calendar. Walk-in sessions are not available.

To schedule a 30-minute session, please visit the calendars listed below. Three appointments are available per hour. Please note: You may need to check all three calendars for an available spot on a desired date/time.

Appointments are held in the Tidwell Center Conference Room, AOB G010D. You should bring your W-2s, Form 1099s, Form 1098Ts, etc., to your sessions. Also bring a copy of last year’s tax return, if possible.

International students should first complete the federal Form 1040 using the Glacier Tax Prep software provided by the University, and then bring the completed federal forms to their appointment for assistance with state tax return preparation.

Appointments are available beginning today (March 22) through April 14 in 30-minute slots, during the following times:

  • Tuesdays — 3:30 to 5 p.m.
  • Wednesdays — 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Thursdays — noon to 2 p.m.

For more information contact Professor Joel Tuoriniemi (COB) at jctuorin@mtu.edu or 906-487-1877.

Deadline Approaching! Apply Soon for Undergraduate Research Internships

URIP Application Deadline: 5 p.m. Friday (March 25).

Pavlis Honors College (PHC) is still accepting applications to the Undergraduate Research Internship Program (URIP) for the 2022-23 academic year. The internship program will run from September 2022 through mid-March 2023 and is open to any undergraduate student on campus with an identified faculty research mentor. Faculty and students who are already working together are welcome to apply.

PHC will provide $800 in funding for the student intern, with the expectation that faculty will provide equivalent matching funds to be dispensed concurrently, resulting in a total of $1,600 paid at a rate of $10 per hour over the course of the internship. Faculty may make use of research funds, IRAD or startup packages, or consult their chairs, deans or center/institute management to identify the source of their match.

Details regarding the application process can be found on the Pavlis Honors College website.

The deadline to submit applications is 5 p.m. Friday. Faculty need to supply a letter of support as part of the application package. If you have questions about the submission process, please email urip@mtu.edu.

URIP is made possible with the support PHC and by generous donations from the Portage Health Foundation and the DeVlieg Foundation.

Volunteer for 'The Thanksgiving Play'

Join the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts as a member of the volunteer usher team! Individuals and groups are invited to be a part of the arts on campus, with opportunities including:

See more volunteer opportunities at the Rozsa's Calendar of Events.

What do volunteer ushers do?
This season is full of exceptional, innovative and fun performances. Volunteer ushers play a critical role in creating a welcoming environment as our community reconnects for vibrant live arts experiences. You could fill one of several positions: greeter, ticket scanner, program helper or seating guide, or be a floating usher who fills in where they are needed.

Do I do this alone or with other people?
You will never be alone! Each show will have a house manager and 2-12 volunteer ushers, depending on the size of the event. You are always welcome to put together a group — friends, family or people from an organization — and enjoy the shared experience of bringing a production to life.

What experience or training do I need?
You don’t need any. All the training you need will take place the day of the show, before guests arrive.

What is the time commitment for a show?
You will arrive 90 minutes before the show, monitor the audience while you enjoy the show for free, and then stay to help with some light cleanup for 30 minutes or less after the show.

Visit the Rozsa's Volunteer to Usher page, sign up to volunteer using our online form, or email Samantha Hoover at shoover@mtu.edu to learn more and get involved.

Three ATWG Members Earn Accessibility Certification

Three members of Michigan Tech’s Accessible Technology Working Group (ATWG) recently completed requirements for designation as certified professionals in accessibility core competencies (CPACC), as conferred by the International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP):

  • Jeff Toorongian (CTL), associate director and campus accessible technology coordinator
  • Amy Blake (IT), communications and accessibility manager
  • Desiree Valle (UMC), web developer: accessibility

CPACC professionals have demonstrated broad cross-disciplinary competency in disabilities; accessibility and universal design; and accessibility-related standards, laws and management strategies.

Relevant domains for the CPACC credential include the web and other digital technologies; architecture and the built environment; consumer and industrial design; transportation systems; and any domain in which thoughtful design, policy and management can improve disability access.

The ATWG leads campuswide efforts to improve the access of University Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), including University systems, websites, electronic documents, and educational and training materials, in support of University Policy 1.15: Accessible Information and Communication Technology.

All members of the University community are welcome to join the ATWG. For more information, please email accessibility-l@mtu.edu.

BioSci Seminar: 'Cellular Models'

The Department of Biological Sciences (BioSci) will host a virtual seminar by Smitha Rao (BioSci) on Thursday (March 24) via Zoom.

Rao's presentation is titled "Cellular models: In vitro studies to assess cellular responses."

From the abstract:
Cellular responses provide us with an understanding of pathways impacting the cells and differences in responses to specific treatments. For example, ongoing work in Dr. Rao's lab in Biomedical Engineering at Michigan Tech uses cellular models to study fructose uptake in cancer cells. Through the use of breast cancer cells, proliferation, migration, and protein expression changes related to cancer have been assessed. The studies have been extended to 3D cultures to better represent the in vivo conditions. More recent studies have focused on cellular models to assess the risk of exposure to arsenic contained in soils through contact exposure. In this seminar, Dr. Rao will present an overview and progress in both these research areas.

Track and Field Teams Take First at Meet for Milwaukee

Michigan Tech men's and women's outdoor track and field topped the field in points and received a number of strong performances at Raabe Stadium Saturday (March 19) in the Meet for Milwaukee, hosted by Wisconsin Lutheran College.

The Husky men finished with 151.6 points ahead of Wisconsin Lutheran (117) while the Husky women posted 174 points to take first over Wisconsin Lutheran (74).

"This was a smaller meet and a great season opener for us," said head coach Kristina Owen. "We were able to bring our whole team, which allowed us a chance to grow team cohesion and also gave everyone a chance to show what they can do. The conditions were not ideal for setting top marks, but we did bust the rust of winter off and I was happy with our performances overall in relatively low-pressure situations."

Reminder

Film Board And Bad Info Presenting 'Feels Good Man'

Tomorrow (March 23), the Film Board and Bad Info present "Feels Good Man," an unrated film.

According to PBS.org: "'Feels Good Man' is the story of how artist Matt Furie, creator of a trippy, once-benign comic character named Pepe the Frog, fought an uphill battle to reclaim his iconic creation from those who turned it into a symbol of hate. An exploration of the power of online imagery and the fascinating spin cycle of memes in a culture where ownership and meaning can be wrested away from creators, Feels Good Man is a thought-provoking, wild ride through an Internet that transformed an unlucky cartoon frog, and then the rest of the world."

Showing:

  • Wednesday, March 23 — 6:30 p.m.

Located on Michigan Tech's campus in Fisher 135.

Admission is free for students and community members, and concessions are $1. We hope to see you at the movie tomorrow — and have a great day.
