Humans of Michigan Tech: Gowtham '07

“Coming from a middle class family in India, we didn’t really have the means for me to pursue studies abroad. During my undergrad and master’s, I worked as a proofreader for textbook publishers and a tutor for students. I earned the equivalent of about $20 each month and $19 of it went to my parents to help offset family costs. The remaining dollar covered my occasional bus fare to science lectures across town and a snack afterward with the speaker/friends. In mid- to late 2001, Dr. Pushpa Murthy (Chem) was traveling through India. One of my master’s teachers knew her well and arranged a couple of meetings. A few correspondences followed with Drs. Ravi Pandey and John Jaszczak (Physics) and they agreed to take a chance on me without the GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) or TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) — I couldn’t afford them. Upon learning that I couldn’t afford the postage, Dr. Murthy literally carried my application to Michigan Tech. My teachers, who had encouraged me and been willing to pay the application fee out of their own hard-earned money, convinced a bank to give me an educational loan that covered travel expenses."

Digital Commons and OERs

Celebrate Open Education Week with the Van Pelt and Opie Library by participating in our weeklong discussion. Today, the Library wants to know: What components of your course could incorporate OERs? Tell us your thoughts, share the discussion and follow along in the OE Week discussion section of the Library’s Open Educational Resources (OERs) page.

Continue the celebration by checking out the collection of Open Educational Resources authored by the Michigan Tech community. This collection, highlighted in Digital Commons @ Michigan Tech, includes a number of open access books, an extensive list of journal articles and even two units of openly licensed curricular materials from the Mi-STAR program.

Authors with their OERs in Digital Commons are not only able to reach a global audience, but receive valuable readership statistics on a user-friendly author dashboard. Take a look at this shareable version of the dashboard for "Bryophyte Ecology," whose subchapters have been downloaded nearly 300,000 times since 2017 by readers from all over the world.

Are you working on an open textbook, article or curricular materials? Consider making it available to the world by adding your work to Digital Commons @ Michigan Tech. Email library@mtu.edu to learn more.

Lecture: Replacement of Oyster Reefs by Mangroves

Today (March 17), the Department of Biological Sciences will host a virtual talk by Giovanna McClenachan from 3-4 p.m. via Zoom.

McClenachan's presentation is titled "Replacement of oyster reefs by mangroves: Unexpected climate-driven ecosystem shifts."

From the abstract:
Globally, increases in minimum air temperatures have facilitated the transition of salt marshes to mangrove forests over the past 30 years. However, we recently discovered a novel climate driven ecosystem shift from oyster reef to mangrove island along Florida’s eastern coast, something previously never documented. ... The shift is not consistent across all reefs and there is a need to uncover the interactions of broadscale climate and local driving factors. We are beginning to analyze oyster reefs and mangrove islands in varying stages of conversion at multiple locations along the entire North American poleward mangrove extent, assessing mangrove survival, biogeochemical properties, sediment composition, reef elevation changes, and hydrologic regimes.

Husky Innovate, in collaboration with the MTEC SmartZone and Matt Monte of Monte Consulting, is hosting a workshop called “Telling Your Story” from 4-5:30 p.m. today (March 17) via Zoom.
