Michigan Tech Scientist and Students Collaborate in First Great Lakes Winter Grab

The Michigan Tech's Great Lakes Research center, the ice-covered Keweenaw Waterway where sampling took place in February 2022.

A Michigan Tech team led by Trista Vick-Majors (BioSci/GLRC) is collecting samples in the Keweenaw Waterway and from Keweenaw Bay near Baraga as part of the Great Lakes region’s first Winter Grab, designed to fill a scientific sampling gap by examining the lakes in winter.

Vick-Majors’ team, which will also serve as the hub for receiving and analyzing bacterial samples from around the lakes, is layering this data on the group’s nearly two-year record of under-ice data on microbial communities and carbon cycling in the Keweenaw Waterway.

Women's History: Healing, Hope, and Equality for All

March is Women’s History Month. Each year the National Women’s History Alliance picks a theme that represents an important aspect of women’s role in the American ethos. This year, the focus is “Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope,” paying tribute to caregivers and frontline workers during the pandemic and in prior history.

“While women make up about half of the population, they have been disenfranchised and undervalued within Eurocentric histories,” writes Riley Powers, junior scientific and technical communication major. Powers looks back on this history and its relevance today in a new post on the Diversity and Inclusion Newsblog.

MEG Offers Cross-Generational Research Opportunities for Graduates

Join us for an informational presentation on Social Sciences' new experiential research and mentorship program, Mentoring Experiences for Graduates (MEG).

The presentation will be held from 4-5 p.m. March 18 in AOB 201.

Melissa Baird (SS) will provide an overview of MEG, which expands our department's signature undergraduate research program, Undergraduate Program for Exploration and Research in Social Sciences (UPERSS).

MEG provides collaborative cross-generational research and mentoring experience. Students receive credits to lead a mentoring team (i.e., graduate mentor, undergraduate mentee and faculty advisor) on a semester-long research experience. Graduate students serve as peer mentors to undergraduate students on a UPERSS (or other proposed research projects).

MEG promotes a collaborative research experience. It seeks to train and prepare students the mentoring skillsets needed in future academic and non-academic careers. Graduate students design a living syllabus, attend an information workshop at the start of the semester and work with their mentees on a presentation of their research experiences at the annual Social Sciences Undergraduate Research Symposium in spring.

Larissa Juip will provide an overview of her experiences during our first MEG/UPERSS experience. She will present on her MEG project, "Applying an Indigenous Methodology: Storying a Tribal Landscape System" (funded in part through an ongoing NSF project, "CNH2-S: Convergence Research: Bridging Knowledge Systems and Expertise for Understanding the Dynamics of a Contaminated Tribal Landscape System").

Seminar: Mental Stress Pressor Response and Aortic Wave Reflection

Biological Sciences is hosting a presentation by Aditi P. Vyas from 3-4 p.m. Thursday (March 3) via Zoom.

From the abstract:
Reactivity to mental stress has been linked to cardiovascular risk, and is shown to negatively influence aortic wave reflection for up to an hour after acute mental arithmetic. It has been postulated that sympathetic catecholamine release during stressful tasks drives the sustained elevation in wave reflection. In the study, they sought to determine how muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) reactivity influence post mental stress aortic augmentation index (AIx). Their results indicate that the aortic wave reflection responses to mental stress appears to be linked to the pressor response, but not sympathetic or perceived stress responses. This is novel preliminary data that suggests there may not be a direct link between sympathetic activation and aortic wave reflection following cognitive stress.

Hockey Loses Twice to Mavericks

No. 14 Michigan Tech lost twice to No. 1 Minnesota State on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 25 and 26) at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

The Huskies fell 2-1 in overtime on Friday. It was the 11th overtime game of the season for the Huskies — their third straight and the second against the Mavericks this season.

Saturday, Tech wrapped up the regular season with a 2-1 loss to the Mavericks. It was their fourth one-goal game against MSU this season.

"I thought that we played a solid hockey game," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "I thought the goaltending was outstanding on both ends. It was a good game and we're going to come out feeling confident that we can compete with anybody in the country."

Tech finishes 19-11-3 overall and 16-8-2 in the CCHA and will turn their attention to the postseason. The Huskies are the No. 2 seed in the CCHA Mason Cup Playoffs and will host No. 7 seed Ferris State next weekend.

Michigan Tech women's basketball overcame a slow start to defeat Lake Superior State 78-63 Saturday (Feb. 26) at Ron Cooper Gymnasium.

"It was a good way to end the regular season," said head coach Sam Clayton. "I thought Kate was aggressive for us offensively and it was another game where every player contributed. We shared the ball well and defended hard."

The Huskies finished the regular season 17-10, 12-7 GLIAC and will be the No. 4 seed for the conference tournament. The Huskies host No. 5 seed Northwood tomorrow (March 2) at SDC Gymnasium.
