Library Goes Open with ACM!

The Van Pelt and Opie Library is excited to announce its new five-year agreement with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).

ACM Open provides MTU authors the option to publish Open Access (OA) in ACM journals, conference proceedings and magazines without paying author processing charges (APCs). Most publishers of OA content charge APCs. In the library’s agreement with ACM, these charges are waived for the author.

ACM is the world's largest educational and scientific computing society. Its digital library provides resources that advance computing as a science and a profession. The library’s access to ACM’s digital library remains unchanged except for the addition of OA content.

The Open Access publishing model allows end users free access to content. Authors retain their copyright and make their articles available through a Creative Commons license. To learn more about ACM Open or OA publishing, contact the library at library@mtu.edu.

Postdoc Hiring Guidelines and Process

Postdoctoral scholars (postdocs) are valuable members of our campus community and contribute greatly to the research activities at Michigan Tech. These positions are often dependent on external funding and often require highly specialized skills. As a result, it is important to maintain fair hiring practices that allow for rapid hiring of postdocs but also allow for diverse applicants to be considered for these positions. All postdoctoral scholars and positions must meet the current guidelines.

Human Resources, along with the Graduate School and Institution Equity, have updated the hiring process for postdoctoral scholars.

When a postdoc position is available, there must be an open search using the current process in Human Resources. Human Resources will post the position and collect application materials for the supervisor to review using the established hiring processes.

If a postdoc supervisor has a candidate identified, a posting waiver may be submitted for consideration if one of the following conditions are met:

  • The candidate for the position has completed a Ph.D. at Michigan Tech within one calendar year of the start date; or
  • The candidate possesses scarce skills required for the position.

Resources for hiring postdocs can be found on the Graduate School's  Guidelines for Hiring Postdoctoral Scholars web page. For more information on hiring postdocs by publicly posting the position or information on the posting waiver process, please contact Renee Ozanich in Human Resources at rozanich@mtu.edu.

Research Data and Digital Commons @ Michigan Tech

Funding agencies are increasingly requiring researchers to make research data publicly available at the conclusion of their project when appropriate. A variety of platforms and archives exist that will satisfy this need. This virtual session will cover one option available to the Michigan Tech community: Digital Commons @ Michigan Tech, the University’s institutional repository. Join the library at noon next Thursday (Jan. 20) to learn more.

At the end of this workshop, attendees will understand how Digital Commons makes content publicly available, the advantages and limitations of the Digital Commons platform and what is required of a researcher in order to submit research data to Digital Commons @ Michigan Tech.

Registration is required for this virtual workshop. Zoom info will be provided via email to registered attendees.

Reminders

Face Coverings Required Indoors on Campus

While Michigan Tech is at Health and Safety Level Two, face coverings must be worn indoors. This applies to all students, employees and visitors, regardless of vaccination status.

Michigan Tech strongly recommends that all employees and students make choices to protect themselves, such as getting vaccinated, wearing high-filtration face coverings, and practicing enhanced sanitation and physical distancing where possible — especially in light of the increased transmissibility of the COVID-19 omicron variant.

Please be aware that if you are exposed to COVID-19, quarantine guidelines vary depending on vaccination status.

In Level Two, students and employees are not required to monitor their symptoms daily prior to coming to campus. But, individuals should be mindful of their own symptoms. A useful monitoring tool is available from the CDC.

Preparing for a Classroom Emergency

Preparing for the evacuation of a building is an important component of being an instructor. Students, even in the University setting, will look to instructors for guidance during an emergency. Michigan Tech requires faculty and instructors to take a few minutes at the beginning of each semester to familiarize themselves and students with basic evacuation routes and emergency procedures.

What specifically should instructors do?

  • Familiarize themselves with the building, floor and classroom they will be teaching in. Classrooms are equipped with emergency evacuation postings; use these to orient yourself to exit locations.
  • Communicate evacuation routes and assembly areas outside of buildings to students in case of an emergency.
  • Remind students that if they need assistance exiting a building during an emergency, it is up to them to self-identify (in private if desired).
  • In the event of an emergency, provide leadership and follow established procedures for all building alarms and emergencies.

The University Safety Manual provides additional information regarding emergency action and fire prevention plans.

Please email ehs-help@mtu.edu if you would like your classroom evacuation maps in PDF format.
