Minimum Supported Version of macOS Required by Feb. 28

On Feb. 28, Michigan Tech IT will remove all Mac computers from the network that are not running macOS Catalina (10.15.7) or higher. Apple is no longer supporting operating systems older than 10.15.7, making those computers vulnerable to security threats and posing a risk to our network.

If your Mac falls in this category, you will need to upgrade your operating system. If your computer is unable to meet the hardware requirements for the upgrade, our IT procurement staff can help you explore other options.

For more information, please review our KB article on the minimum supported version of macOS. If you have any questions, we can help. Contact us at it-help@mtu.edu or call 906-487-1111.

Minimum Wage Increased Jan. 1

Effective Jan. 1, 2022, the minimum wage has increased from $9.65 to $9.87 per hour. All employees who fell below this new hourly rate will see an automatic increase. Department-generated EPAFs will not be needed.

For jobs starting after Jan. 1, please be sure to use the minimum wage of $9.87 per hour. This change will have an impact on departments that pay students and temporary employees less than this amount.

Lean Facilitators Achieve Certification

The Office of Continuous Improvement wants to congratulate the following Michigan Tech employees for achieving their Lean certification in 2021:

Yellow Belts
Yellow belt Lean practitioners understand the principles of continuous improvement, keep their skills current and enrich our community of practice. Our 2021 yellow belts are: Samantha Butkovich, Debra Charlesworth, Annelise Doll, Renee Ozanich, Wendy Hackman, Lori Hardyniec, Nagesh Hatti, Pattie Luokkanen, John Pakkala and Ginger Sleeman.

Green Belts
Green belt Lean facilitators are the backbone of our Lean initiatives. They facilitate the majority of improvement events for the University; role model improvement processes, methods and tools; and deliver basic Lean instruction to their peers. Our 2021 green belts are: Matt Bryan, Elisabeth Dennis, Laura Harry, Linnea McGowan Hobmeier, Alexandra Holmstrom, Brian Hutzler, Steve Knudstrup, Georgeann Larson and Richelle Schwaller.

Black Belts
Black belt senior Lean facilitators are the key to our program's continued growth and success. In addition to carrying the responsibilities of the previous levels, these senior Lean facilitators lead, coach, mentor and teach the other facilitators. Our 2021 black belts are: Theresa Coleman-Kaiser, Gina LeMay, Laurie Stark, Briana Tucker and Lorraine Young.

The goal of this rigorous annual certification is to enhance the application of Lean thinking and tools for the benefit of Michigan Tech. At all levels of certification, facilitators plan for Lean skill development, apply their skills to improve their work, participate in continuing education and a community of practice, learn together and reflect on their activities. This is an especially remarkable achievement because of the pandemic.

We would also like to thank supervisors for allowing release time for facilitators so they can sharpen their skills and improve University processes. We know it can be difficult and sometimes inconvenient, and we want you to know we appreciate you.

Data Management Plans and the DMP Tool

Many research proposals require a data management plan (DMP) and any research project could benefit from having one. Join the library and Ryan Williams, assistant director of the Geospatial Research Facility, at noon next Wednesday (Jan. 19) to learn about DMPs and how to write one using the DMPTool.

This virtual session will cover why and how to create a DMP. Attendees will leave with an understanding of the purpose of a DMP, will recognize the value of these documents and will be able to use the DMPTool to easily create one.

Registration is required for this virtual workshop. Zoom info will be provided via email to registered attendees.

While Michigan Tech is at Health and Safety Level Two, face coverings must be worn indoors. This applies to all students, employees and visitors, regardless of vaccination status.

Michigan Tech strongly recommends that all employees and students continue with handwashing and hand-sanitizing practices, especially in light of the virulence of the COVID-19 delta variant. Please be aware that if you are exposed to COVID-19, quarantine guidelines vary depending on vaccination status.

In Level Two, students and employees are not required to monitor their symptoms daily prior to coming to campus. But, individuals should be mindful of their own symptoms. A useful monitoring tool is available from the CDC.
