Guest Blog: Learning Centers Help Students Get Comfortable with Discomfort

Drone image of the Michigan Tech campus at dawn.

Students who engage in peer-to-peer learning and studying through Michigan Tech’s learning centers bump up their grades, find support while navigating difficult subjects, help other students and build communication and group skills they’ll need in their careers.

But gathering around a whiteboard wasn’t an option during the pandemic. The directors of the Chemistry Learning Center, Michigan Tech Writing Center and Math Learning Center share insights on what worked, what didn’t, how they’ll move forward and why no student needs to struggle on their own.

Michigan Tech Athletics Adjusts Facility Guidelines for Fall Sports

Michigan Tech Athletics is adjusting facility guidelines for fall sports —volleyball, soccer and football — in keeping with Michigan Tech's move to Health and Safety Level Two on Aug. 15.

Face coverings are required on entry to the SDC, regardless of vaccination status, but may be removed while fans are eating or drinking in their seats. Please reference and adhere to all posted signage. Face coverings are highly recommended but not required for outdoor game days.

We encourage all fans to please continue frequent handwashing (especially before and after meals) and hand sanitization, and to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

Lakeshore Center Update

Late in the afternoon on August 25, a portion of a concrete dock next to the Lakeshore Center fell into the Keweenaw Waterway. The dock had been under surveillance due to cracking and shifting, and foot traffic on the dock was restricted two weeks ago while its condition was assessed. Michigan Tech Public Safety and Police Services, as well as UP Engineers and Architects, were on the scene immediately after the dock portion fell.

Initial reports indicate the Lakeshore Center was not damaged and is not at risk. Out of an abundance of caution, access to the building is currently restricted, with only those who are helping assess and repair the damage allowed on-site.

The Lakeshore Center is a Michigan Tech building that houses some administrative functions—it is located away from the main campus. Employees have been asked to work remotely for approximately 10-14 days until repairs are complete.

ADVANCE Roundup: Fall Welcome for Diversities and Disabilities

As we return to campus life, keeping everyone safe requires that we recognize how commonplace logistics and behavioral patterns can create difficulties and even barriers to full access and participation for those with disabilities.

The University of Washington’s AccessADVANCE focuses on guidelines for making campus life more accessible for and inclusive of those with disabilities, particularly women and underrepresented members in STEM. The project is currently compiling lists of guiding questions to facilitate campus capacity-building based on universal design approaches and prioritizing systemic change. Resources such as these encourage us to take a broadly inclusive approach as we develop unit strategic plans for diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility (DEIA) and belonging. We hope that campus life will prove welcoming for everyone in our campus community this fall.

Today’s feature was shared with us by the ADVANCE team. If you have an article you think we should feature, please email it to advance-mtu@mtu.edu and we will consider adding it to the ADVANCE Roundup.

The ADVANCE Roundup is brought to you by ADVANCE at Michigan Tech, an NSF-funded initiative dedicated to improving faculty career success, retention, diversity, equity and inclusion. Past articles are available on the ADVANCE Newsblog.

Fall Little Huskies Basketball League Registration Now Open

Michigan Tech men's and women's basketball are excited to offer two fall Little Huskies basketball leagues — and registration is now open.

For boys grades 3-6, the camp will take place Oct. 11-14, with registration closing on Oct. 7. Players will leave with fundamental basketball skills like ball handling, shooting, team play and defensive play. The camp is Monday-Thursday from 4-6 p.m. in the SDC Multipurpose Gym.

For girls grades 2-5, camp is scheduled Sept. 11 to Oct. 2, with registration closing Sept. 9. Camp will be on Saturdays from 9-11 a.m. in the SDC Multipurpose Gym.

The cost is the same for boys and girls: $50 for the first player and $25 per sibling. Youngsters from all local school districts and skill levels are encouraged to participate.

Both camps will provide an excellent opportunity to play basketball and learn from current Michigan Tech men's and women's basketball players, who will be coaches in the league.

Huskies Rank Fourth in GLIAC Preseason Soccer Poll

Michigan Tech has been selected to finish fourth in the annual Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) preseason coaches' poll.

Grand Valley State took the league's top position with 62 points and six first-place votes. Ferris State was right behind with 59 points. Northern Michigan was third with 49 points, followed by the Huskies with 44 points.

The Huskies return all but two players from last year and have nine incoming first-year players looking to contribute. Head coach Bulut Ozturk returns for his second season, hoping to build off a 5-4-1 shortened spring season. Last season, the Huskies netted 19 goals in 10 games, averaging 15.7 shots per game.

New Funding

Snehamoy Chatterjee (GMES/ICC) is the principal investigator (PI) on a project that has received a $288,343 research and development contract from the Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

The project is titled "Mine Health and Safety Big Data Analysis and Text Mining by Machine Learning Algorithms."

Aref Majdara (ECE/ICC) is a co-PI on this potential two-year project.

Reminders

Face Coverings Required Indoors on Campus

While Michigan Tech is at Health and Safety Level Two, face coverings must be worn indoors. This applies to all students, employees, and visitors, regardless of vaccination status.

In Level Two, students and employees are not required to monitor their symptoms daily prior to coming to campus. But, individuals should be mindful of their own symptoms. A useful monitoring tool is available from the CDC.

Michigan Tech strongly recommends that all employees and students receive the COVID-19 vaccine and continue with handwashing and hand-sanitizing practices, especially in light of the virulence of the COVID-19 delta variant.

During all Health and Safety Levels, no one with COVID-19 symptoms is allowed on campus.

Saturday Night: Comedian Pete Lee!

Free late night comedy at 10 p.m. tomorrow (Aug. 28) in the Rozsa!

Pete Lee might be the nicest person in New York City, but that’s because it’s impossible to sound aggressive with a Wisconsin accent. He was raised in Janesville, Wisconsin, by divorced parents and a 19-inch television, which is probably why he pursued a career in entertainment.

Thanks to his highly rated Comedy Central Presents half-hour special, Lee has packed venues at over 500 colleges and universities across the country. He has also been a standout on NBC’s Last Comic Standing and played a doctor on the CBS soap opera "As the World Turns." You won't want to miss this event!
